Try using the gparted livecd (google that and you'll find it), I haven't had any success with it but loads of other people say it works...

It's a livecd, you boot from it, you don't actually install Linux...

PopLap it doesn't install Linux as an operating system, it's just a bootable CD that will allow you to modify your partitions.

And you are using a Lenovo laptop? If so, there is a chance the factory installed something that blocks you from changing the size of your C drive. And if that is true, you'll have to contact them or hope someone with better experience can help you. I have a DELL.

If you C:\ is "locked" like it was in my case, you can try 'redistribute the free space' option (if vista disk managment actually has this option)..

Another alternative is to clean up your hdd, and move your files into another partition, such as pic/video/music.

At the bottom there is a key and it says it means it is a extended partition.

I clean installed my laptop. So I never had a problem changing the size of the partition. But I really have never seen anything like yours. Best is always to get technical help from the manufacturer. They know their machine better than most others.

The Shrink Volume feature in Windows Vista has some serious limitations, see the explanation here.

The Gpart Live CD is a quick download and is your best bet. Or my preference is Acronis disk Director.

Has anyone figured out what the best solution to this is? I tried the Vista Disk Management utility and diskpart.exe and neither of them worked. I'm hesitant to use gpart because I read someone that it could prevent vista from booting properly.

I currently have 3.67gigs left and I haven't done any tweaking yet. Anyone know how much space can I expect to free up after removing all of the vista junk files?

I just used GParted on two XPS models, last week and it worked so well... Everything has been fine, no issues, no problems.... Its a charm I must say, and following at that howtogeek guide (wonderful pictorial, clear guide) must just keep you prefectly fine with the partitioning activity. And its so easy to use!!!! (Haven't tried Acronis though, to compare which is the best... guess it would boil down to user preference in the end!!)

Perfect except it left out a little nooby tid bit about how you need to shrink your old partition on the same side as the one you want to expand... lol I'll never get that time back

This really is a lengthy process! To move 100gigs took an hour and a half on my computer and I'm rockin a 7200rpm hdd and a 2.2ghz c2d with 4gigs of ram. Don't get ****y with your specs! After you have created the gparted boot disk, wait until half an hour before bedtime and start it then. Just set it and forget it... You'll have a nice surprise when you wake up in the morning. :D

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning because I'm not sure if Gparted is intelligent enough to eliminate the steps before starting, but every time you tweak a drive with the Resize/Move button, it creates a new operation. Before you hit apply, check that the number of operations is as few as possible. If you have 6 or 9 because you were making minor changes when you only needed 3 to get your desired result, it might make each operation in order which could take forever.
