I searched and found quite a lot of information on CCleaner and well, pretty much everything on this forum, thanks to all. I downloaded CCleaner about a week ago and since then have cleaned my system twice, including the registry. I've performed backups on both occasions.

Since then, I've kept on reading this forum and there seems to be mixed feelings about using the registry cleaner feature of CCleaner, so I've decided to not use it from now on as cleaning the registry won't have a substantial upside on performance nor HDD available size.

My question is this, since I've already cleaned the registry twice, should I restore the backups?. I haven't had any problems, so not sure if I should just stop using the registry cleaner from now on or should I take an extra step and restore the registries it has already deleted(?).

    Thanks in advance.

Not necessay, if the system has been stable since the last clean.
If you want to restore anyway, restore the latest backup first, then the next in order....But you'll be just restoring invalid/broken DLLs, registry keys and values :p.
CCleaner normally doesn't remove/fix the good/working stuff, so restoring the bad/not-working stuff may cause instability....

There's really no reason to restore them if everything is running fine. Even though it's probably a small improvement in performance, I think cleaning up your registry is still a good idea. However, I also like to keep my computer as clean as possible (software-wise).

Ccleaners registry is completely safe. Feel free to use it.

I've never experienced any trouble with that feature of CCleaner.

I agree. After using a variety of cleaners, I feel CCleaner is one of the safest.
I also like Avanquest, but you can't beat CCleaner for the money :)

Where did you hear 'mixed feelings about Ccleaners registry cleaner'?

Its the safest registry cleaner ive used. Its not the best and most thorough but it still cleans up well.

Ive ran Ccleaner alot of systems. I dont even bother backing up my registry anymore

Agreed, it's one of the safest registry cleaners available, the reason being that it doesn't overdo it. It only grabs at the obvious. Other hardcore registry cleaners are their own undoing, in that they try to "guess" at where a registry entry should be, what it should be tied to, etc, and make those corrections (often mistakes). You won't have a problem with CCleaner's registry cleaner, if you're worried just make a backup.

That being said, cleaning the registry normally will have 0 effect on system performance. Cleaning the registry USED to be helpful back in early version of windows, but ever since XP and above, even hundreds of old/useless registry entries won't adversely affect the system at all. It is more of a cosmetics thing. I still opt to clean my registry, though, because I like feeling like my computer is clean and organized, like most who use this forum, but I'm realistic in knowing not to expect any type of performance increase, etc.

You can find many different opinions on the Vista tweaks thread or if you search this forums for "registry cleaners".
