Hey guys,
About two weeks ago my Itunes said my ipod was corrupted and needs to be restored and then it does so and says it is still corrupted upon rebooting the Ipod... this cycle can go on forever. I also noticed that my disc drive will spin a disc but when I open it in My Computer it simply shows it as empty. Upon system boot into Windows a Nero message box would say something about some problems with Upper or Lower Drives or something like that so I uninstalled Nero completely.
I uninstalled everything to do with apple and itunes/ipod as well with a 3rd party uninstaller and tried cleaning out my Registry of all left overs.
Now my PC does not do anything except charge my ipod upon connecting and my disc drive still doesn't work. I have XP SP3 on the MSI listed below.
Any help or suggestions would be solid!

Malware?
Have you checked for viruses, etcetera? -
Antivir comes up clean...
Are there are ways drivers or registry entries could get out of wack and do this? I really just want my ipod back! -
I suspect damge to the registry could do this.
(The registry can do close to anything)
You could have a corrupted file...
...you may be missing a crucial file... -
Just reinstalled itunes - still had my playlists and songs... meaning it did not fully uninstall. great. Also same problem with the ipod. What makes me think this is a problem with my PC and not apple software/ipod is that the ipod is only seen as a removable disk in My Computer, normally it identifies as IPOD.

Ok. Driver upgrade?

I think something is wrong with your registry but I have no idea how to fix this.
Just to verify if this is actually a Windows problem you can download a linux live CD(any distro will do) and try your cd-rom/usb there. -
Have you tried doing a system restore (that should help if the problem is just corrupted drivers)?
-
like restoring to a previous point? i guess i could try that... sorry for the numb question but that won't affect my downloads and documents - only system files right?

But system retores tend to mess up a lot of stuff too.... generally non-microsoft software...

Perhaps the usual Upper and Lower Filter problem.
Try the advice in this Microsoft KB article.
John -
Tried a system restore to a month before this problem started. Nothing. Went through John Ratsey's link but I had neither of those registry entries so nothing to delete.
I then wanted to cd if a windows repair install might do something but the problem is my xp is tinyxp. While running repair from the tinyxp cd it said it could not find framdit.ttf but i told it to skip cuz its just a stupid font file but then it said it can't find fs.rec.sys i quit after that cuz i don't know if this is important or not. Do you guys know if i can run repair from tinyxp as in all the missing files aren't too important - since tinyxp is all about removing useless junk. or is this an important file?
Furthermore, do you think a repair install will help my initial situation? -
oh and don't know if this has to do with anything but cancelling the repair install uninstalled my display drivers... dunno why but it was pretty annoying
-
oh and now i cannot for the life of me get my driver to install - hence my rez is all out of wack. it's giving me "this device cannot start code 10" for my video card!

Have you tried using the device manager to update/find a driver?
