I don't really care on the difference. Just make sure you aren't using the basic Microsoft defrag because it SUCKS!

Go to download.com and get the auslogics free version. Much better and much faster.

I'd recommend chkdsk first to find and fix if there are any errors.

And I disagree about the built-in MS defrag being suck, cause it doesn't, it will do the job just fine. Don't believe all the hype about the other 3rd party defrag software.

Agreed. Windows defrag is fine and chkdsk first.

Didn't Windows do the chkdsk automatically back in the Windows 98 SE days before a defrag? I believe that's why it would always take tremendously long to get through the first 10% then speed through the rest.

I guess it doesn't do that anymore?

Windows Defrag gets the job done, but 3rd party apps get it done quicker. I recommend the free Auslogic Disk Defrag.. available from download.com (or just google it). I use it, and it works.

i've been using TuneUp Utilities 2008 for defrag.

and somebody has mentioned to me that chkdsk should come after defrag, because defragmentation consists of lots of reading and rewriting files.

I don't see the point in doing it after. The reason why a person would chkdsk first is so that Windows will no not to write to damaged sectors. That way, the defrag won't move data to/from any that may be damaged.

Doing it afterwords would be irrelevant because reading & writing doesn't damage your hard disc. So it would just be a waste of time.
