My CPU usage is stuck at 50% even when my computer is idle, I have done a few restarts and scanned with ad-aware and spybot, they found nothing. I then scanned with AVG and a changed kernel showed up (not really sure what that means) but it didn't say it was a virus. Can anyone help?

Go into the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and click the Processes tab. Then click the CPU column so the CPU usage percentage is listed in descending order. What's at the top?

Ok, at the top I have tvtsched.exe with CPU 50 and then System Idle Process with CPU 50 as well. Everything else has CPU 00

google the program tvtsched.exe to get more info, then decide what to do with it.

The System Idle Process is just that - something for the computer to do while it is idle. So nothing to worry about there.

tvtsched.exe is according to several websites an IBM-created ThinkVantage Scheduler process. I suggest reinstalling the ThinkVantage suite (if that's possible - I'm not a ThinkPad owner yet so I couldn't tell you).

Huh, yea I'm not sure if that is possible either...I posted in the IBM forum asking which part of the suite it goes with, I think it maybe away manager. I was fiddling with away manager last night and changed some settings....I switched them back to the way they were before and restarted but CPU is still at 50%, any other suggestions? I guess I could uninstall away manager since i don't use it....

If you don't use it, uninstall it. It's not a very good solution, but even if you could fix it... why wouldn't you remove something you don't use? Save space. Plus, from the sound of it, you didn't start that process. Which means it's a startup process. Therefore, it's also sucking down on your memory. Get rid of it if you don't need it.

The ThinkVantage suite backs up your data in case your computer crashes - you can just press the ThinkVantage button and restore the computer. But it takes a ton of resources to run. My dad runs a T60 at work, and a lot of the people at his company have disabled ThinkVantage so they can work quicker - it makes that significant of a difference. So I'm not surprised you're getting 50% usage. He hasn't disabled it yet, but knows it is possible to disable ThinkVantage entirely - if you ask the IBM forum how to do that you might be able to get the answer.

Or it could be in your manual - that's always worth a check.

That won't do anything. 50% is almost certainly because there's a single-threaded application completely monopolizing one of his CPU cores. He needs to remove the offending application, not try to turn off the system that keeps his processor from burning up.

Well after a few attempts at different things, I just decided to end the process that was eating up 50% of my CPU. After that I restarted at haven't seen the problem since.

Although I did go into services.msc and to find the TVT scheduler and change its setting to manual instead of automatic. Once I did I rebooted but ran into some issues, my windows bar at the bottom of the screen was unresponsive...so I went into safe mode changed it back to auto then rebooted and everything worked fine.

I do think TVT is part of Rescue and Recovery which I have yet to use, maybe I will uninstall it, idk, but it would prob trim off a few of my 60 process....man thinkvantge is a beast
