Even if I turn off all programs, the usage is still fluctuating. I looked up my hijackthis list and nothing seems to be suspicious.

I started this morning when I first turned on my computer. I downloaded a few things but nothing was caught by AVG.

Temperatures on the CPU is normal. Around 39c so what's going on? Any ideas?

    Here's the HIjackthis log:

What a coincidence this thread. My CPU just pegged at 100% too and would just sit there. It was Bing toolbar that was doing it. OP bring up task manager like Indrek said and see what running process is maxing out the CPU.

Opening up Task Manager, and the only thing above 100k is Chrome. Turned that off and it's the same deal. I'm going to see if I can spybot under safe mode.

Man, it's so hard typing right now. It's going at 5 letters a second. Will report back!

Click on the Processes tab and see if any processes are doing 99%? :)

I didn't know processes showed CPU usage. Hmm I don't see how to change it. Wow I feel so noob.

In safemode it's completely normal. So at least it's not hardware failure. Gonna run spybot n

Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Then, click on the "Processes" tab. Click on the "CPU" column to sort by the CPU usage.

Thanks. System idle process is taking 80+. And oddly only 28k. Is it a virus?

I think it might be my AVG. Gonna disable it a bit and see if that works.

If AVG was doing a scan it could explain the CPU peg. What you need to do is bring up task manager, click on the Processes tab.

Look at the bottom CPU Usage %, then look up at your processes and see if anything adds to the total amount. :)

AVG isn't scanning, I wish it was. It's on neutral defense mode. I disabled Guard and it lowered the CPU usage a bit but not too much.

Right now, it seems stable (40%), unless I open a tab or do something that requires any power, then it skyrockets to 100. Blah, I'll just upgrade to windows 7. About time I did so.

Get rid of AVG and install Avira for your antivirus. You will find that Avira is much lighter on system resource-usage than AVG.

System Idle Process is just there to take up free cycles, it's normal and doesn't contribute to Task Manager's display of overall % CPU usage.

Try Microsoft Security Essentials as an anti virus as well, it's free and pretty light.

Click the "Show processes from all users" button. That's the only way to see system processes that could be eating CPU time.
