I got a 10 year old Gateway M210 laptop thats 32 bit with an IDE hard drive with XP. I want to buy the newer Sony Vaio Flip model# SVF15N17CXB thats Win 8, 64 bit and has a SATA drive. Is it possible to copy the o/s from the IDE drive to the SATA drive so it boots to XP? Will there be any issues?

    Yes you can.

    Issues? oh yeah...

I'd start with getting a second hdd, leave the original hdd untouched. That way you will have access to a working system anytime you need.

You need to disable secure boot (how to do that varies by computer/manufacturer)

When you clone original OS to the new drive and install it in new computer, it will lose it's license (it's tied to the bios/brand of the original computer). Therefore you will need OEM license code at hand that you can enter when needed.

At worst you might find yourself in a BSOD/Boot loop with no possibility to fix it.

If the cloned OS boots, then there is a slight chance to make it somewhat working. Most probably you can't find all the drivers, so performance won't be as good as it could be and you might be limited to basic video drivers (think 640x480 16 colors).

Fresh install with SP3 disc has best chances to work but I'm guessing you have some softwares you want to move to the new computer. Depending on those, consider making a virtual machine out of the old windows and running them in VM.

Hey KLF. I like your idea of making a VM in the new laptop to get my XP working in it. But, would there be problems?

See this link about steps in getting XP Mode installed in Win 8. But again, will there be issues? Would XP run smoothly?

FYI, I just want to get an apolication from my old XP from my IDE HDD and get it to work in Win 8. The application is Opera browser. Do you think its possible to connect the IDE HDD to a computer and open up the files to find Opera? And then copy these files to the Win 8 computer and install Opera in the VM?

I haven't tried running XP in VM for a long time, since I don't have any use for it. Only program I need for XP (VAG-Com car diagnostics) doesn't work in VM anyways so I have a separate laptop for it.

I think you could use VMWare Converter to make a virtual machine out of your current XP pc. Directions in that link are valid, except that isn't really "xp mode" but just regular virtual XP. XP Mode specifically worked like VirtualBox Seamless mode they mention (virtual machine in background, app shows alone in a window. Worked great).

Opera should work just fine as is in Win8, you have/need some specific old version?

    Issues I see..
    1. XP drivers will be needed if you run XP in newer laptops that come with Win8 will not have drivers and will not work properly.
    2. Cloning XP to Sata works but if the laptop isn't a XP laptop you will have driver/software issues.
    3. You need to disable UEFI bios otherwise your XP O/S probably not boot because it doesn't detect a Win8 O/S running.
    4. XP software will not work in Windows 7 already and that shouldn't be to hard to infer Windows 8 more then likely will not run XP software unless you do something like VM mode.
    5. You can't mix 32 bit with 64 bit software especially that old of software. Only place I found this workable is some Vista 32bit drivers and software will install and work correctly in Windows 7x64 O/S. But not that old of O/S like XP. XP programs will not load or run correctly when one installs it on a Win7 machine and it will tell you install it will not guarantee that the XP software will work. The evidence of this is Nero 6 if you install on Windows 7x64 will install but if you try to run it-it will not work or recognize the commands.

Are we talking about bookmarks? If so why not just import the bookmark to the new Opera browser??? Opera browser itself gets updated and if your asking sounds more like bookmark is that what your asking about?? Some clarification is needed here. Opera doesn't have software other then the browser Opera AFAIK if something else give a link???

No, no, not just bookmarks. I'm talking about mail settings, CSS codes in Stylish and other settimgs. Its important that I get my old files in Opera. To clarify, my laptop died and I got my o/s on my IDE HDD. I need to salvage Opera and these personal settings from the o/s.

Well, Opera 12 and other more recent versions will work on Windows 8, so if you can find a way to transfer the settings and bookmarks, you're good.

Hey tijo thanks for the positive news! I actually got Opera 12.16. So all I need to do is find the right files and folders from the HDD I guess.

Can I do the same thing with Word and Excel? I got Word amd Excel applications on my IDE HDD. They got personalized settings from VBA code that I highly need. If this is possible, what files do I need to copy?

I haven't done that with office products but other softwares. Just install the same software version in the new computer and then copy EVERYTHING from the old one over the new installation - works. Sometimes it doesnt... :)
