Hello, I really wanna do a clean install on my new Laptop. I don't know anyone that has the 64 bit retail version of Vista and I can't find one to buy online. If you lend me your disc I will send it back to you with $10. Of course you have no reason to trust me, however we could do the transaction on ebay, I'll buy the disc from you for $10 and i'll even return the disc back to you when i'm done. You will be making $10 for lending me a disc you probably don't even use.
Anyone want to help me out? I need the 64 bit edition.
-
-
It'll cost you less to order it from Microsoft. Then you can keep the disk. They will send you the 64-bit installation DVD if you pay shipping.
-
I have tried to order it from microsoft online and i can;t find where. Everytime I call or Talk to someone online they tell me to contact HP. It's a bunch of BS. I've been trying for over a week to get a disc. Could you lead me in the right direction maybe?
-
I have an OEM disk from my old Sager NP2090. It's Vista Home Premium. Idk if that would work since it's OEM, but I'm willing to try something.
-
Idk either. I am gonna give microsoft another call and see what they say about sending me a disc.
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
-
That will only work if you purchase retail Vista.
-
Ok I called microsoft and they can't give me a disc because it is preinstalled on my computer.
Thund3rball, that link is perfect, however, I don't have a product key. Can I use someone else's? Would anyone be so kind to lend me their 64 bit product key -
Can't. It's one key per Windows Installation, the computer will fail Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Also, it's against the End-User License Agreement.
-
Ahhh maybe that's the problem... you have an OEM license for 32-bit only that came with your laptop. That's too bad.
-
There aren't any 64 bit specific product keys. You have a product key if you are using the OS or it is on your COA.
-
I wasn;t gonna use it to activate vista of course. I just need it so they will allow me to order an install disc.
Everyone is always talking about doing a clean install but I don;t see how they get a hold of the proper discs to do it. I am having a hell of a time.
-
Once my laptop arrives sometime this week will I have a product key for vista if it is preinstalled on on my computer?
-
Yes, you will have to have one, or else it won't work. It will be on your COA.
-
what is my COA?
-
Certificate of Authenticity, it is the sticker that will be on the bottom of your notebook.
-
ok, and I will be able to use that to order the alternate media. Perfect. Finally my problem seems to be solved. Thanks to everyone for helping.
-
Unfortunately you won't
You need to ask your notebook manufacturer for the 64 bit media. -
o jeez. that should be an adventure then. I thought HP would only give me a recovery disc, or I would have asked them before.
-
Did you have the option to select Vista x64 on your configuration? Dell sends out the 64 bit media no problem.
-
OK, HP said they will ship me an OEM disc. I can do a clean install with that right? or will that have all the crappy bloatware jammed on it too?
And yes, I have Vista Home premium 64 bit -
The disc itself shouldn't have any of the extra stuff.
-
I'm also contacting dell since you said they hand them out pretty easily.
-
Sure, if you have a Dell computer with a COA that Dell can verify was issued by them. Dell won't send you discs if you don't have a Dell computer.
-
Yea but i'm willing to try anything. Doesn't seem like I will be able to get a disc though from anyone. I will just have to deal with the bloatware and try to clean it up as best I can.
-
lol I'd love to hear that conversation.
-
Me, too.
It is not hard to remove the preinstalled applications, run CClenaer to remove the excess crap left behind, do a defrag, and have a nice, clean computer. Or, you can just wait until you get the disc HP said they would ship to you, and do an install that won't have any preinstalled applications/bloatware. -
As long as the OEM disc doesn't have bloatware on it, I will try doing it with that. This lady is claiming that the OEM is the same as the recovery disc so who knows how this will turn out.
-
This is not necessarily true. My OEM disc cannot repair windows without a moderate level of modifications.
-
You could also just download a 64bit disc iso (let's not get into the legality here) since you do have the key (bottom of laptop) as you previously stated.
-
Yes, but then you're trading bloatware for the possibility of malware.
-
Check Ebay or Amazon for Vista upgrade discs (contains all versions of Vista). You can use it to do a clean install and it only cost 10-20 bucks. Just back up your Vista activation ( follow step 3 here), install the right version and you're good to go.

cloud_nine, I noticed you own tx2500z. Can I ask you a favor please. I got mine repaired in europe and they changed my MB in the process.
Now those trademark tx2500 backgrounds don't show during vista installation, I suppose they are USA models only. I find it interesting btw, that vista reads MB chipset and offers set of background accordingly (I'm installing from the original US recovery discs).
Could you please send them over to me via email? I just can't find a way to extract them from the recovery dvd.
Many thanks in advance,
Marc Fisher

EDIT: just in case, you can find your installed backgrounds in C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper
btw, is really PM disabled on these forums or am I being dummy? -

Can get from COMP USA.

Your best bet is from your OEM. If they refuse, keep asking. Remember, you've paid them a hell of a lot of money, so don't give up until they cough up a disk for you (remember, the media doesn't cost them anything).
-
You are new, you might need few more posts (15 ?) before the PM mechanismus can be turned on for you.
cheers ... -
oh, that might be it...
can I please ask someone with sufficient reputation to PM cloud_nine and point him to this thread and to my question?
I've been looking all over the internet for owner of this model that I could contact.
Many thanks,
Marc Fisher
Can I borrow someone's Vista install disc so I can do a clean install, I'll make it worth it for you too.
