I have an old Dell laptop with XP Pro installed in it.
I am planning to learn Windows server 2003 or maybe 2008 but I don't want to spend money to get a desktop just to learn this.
Can I use this old Dell Inspiron and install the Win Server 2003 / 2008 to replace the XP Pro?
Will it be a straight install? Just drop the Win Server disk on CD drive and install?
Thanks,
-
It's just like installing any operating system. If it runs XP it will run Server 2003 (for learning purposes) with ease.

Should be, and XP drivers should work. Just make sure you have the proper Internet drivers available on CD/flash drive before you get rid of XP. And have the activation number handy, as without that you won't be able to install.
For Server 2008, you'd need Vista drivers. And for either one, you'll need the proper 32/64 bit drivers depending on which version you're running (I'm assuming you'd use 32-bit Server 2003 for the XP drivers to work). -
Thanks guys,
but what do you mean with "...Just make sure you have the proper Internet drivers available on CD/flash drive before you get rid of XP. " ?
Do you mean I need to install a special Internet Explorer that only works for Win Server? -
Nah, he means drivers for your ethernet card so you can get online and download any other drivers you need. This may or may not actually apply to you.
Can I install Win Server 2003 on XP Pro laptop?
