I want to go back to XP on my laptop (I am selling it), and install my Vista Home Premium on the desktop I am building.
Is this legal?
Will it cause problems forcing me to call MS?

Looks like I finally typed the right phrase into google and found this:
Now I would still like to know if it will cause problems requiring a phone call (although I do think they are open 24/7). -

For vista I can't say. If you install a copy of XP on 2 or 3 different computers (one after the other of course) it rquires a call. Be prepared to have to call them from what I have heard of Vista's security issues. One would hope you wouldn't have to.

For Vista if it's a full retail license then yes I believe you can.
If it's an OEM license that was on the laptop when you got it, then no, you can't (legally) -
Arla is exactly right. An OEM license would be tied to the machine that it came on, but a retail license can be changed to a different machine.

well....
If it's oem you COULD...
Make a digital locker at the digital locker site (do this first)
Then buy a anytime upgrade to ultimate.
That will take care of your oem problems. It would also be a bit cheaper then buying ultimate later on (Go the sams club route, $149).
Can I legally remove Vista from my laptop and install it on my desktop
