    Can I use a generic xp disc??lost Compaq disc

    Got a older Compaq v2000 loaded with virus's. Canot locate factory system restore disc's. Can I use my Compaq XP key on laptop with a XP Home disc to activate windows???? :confused: if not is there a way around??

    You could backup your current key...

    First:
    Your laptop, did it come with XP Pro or Home (media center)? You'll need the same version.
    That's the first step.

    Second:
    Some people had problems activating a retail version with an OEM key or the other way round.

    In theory, legally, if you use your key on the same version of XP, on a loaned original disc you should be OK.
