There's a peculiar quirk with W8/8.1 when using some Nvidia cards. In my case 2 systems (desktops) when installing the video drivers. The screen goes blank and the text is automatically scaled to the HIGHEST DPI. Once that happens all the menus and windows balloon in size. I can manually scale down the DPI which brings the text and window sizes back to normal but my Charms menu, Wifi menu are now much larger. The text in IE11 is now at it's largest setting and I have to manually scale down the text there as well.

I mentioned that this issue is on 2 of my desktops but this is a software OS, related issue. Is there a registry edit to disable auto DPI scaling?

Btw, this is a non-issue in Windows 7 as it doesn't use auto DPI scaling.

I think it's supposed to obey the intel driver settings. And the profiles thee intel panel sets, default profiles, etc. don't always seem to work well if set from the windows settings panel. So there's probably a registry you can override the setting with, but that might cause all kinds of weirdness when switching profiles..

If you untick "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" under Display in the Control Panel, does it do what you want?
