I recently purchased an Asus laptop which has the free windows upgrade,to which I have gone through all the requirements and it is on its way(could be a long time).I have decided to purchase a full version and do a clean install instead,so I was wondering if I could used the Asus disc on another computer when it comes,or is it specific to my laptop??

Assuming the Asus disc is an OEM version, then you'll have to use it on another Asus. It will check the SLIC table in the bios for activation, so while you can install your ASUS windows 7 disc on another PC, you will be unable to activate it.

I think you are probably wrong on that. While OEM disks are often keyed to a certain machine, I don't ever recall seeing an upgrade disk.

Now, legally, I don't know what you're up against, but you have an alternative.

Since you are buying a full version (by that I think you mean retail), you are legally entitled to move a retail version from machine to machine as long as it is removed from the first.

Running the "upgrade" on the Asus and using the supplied activation key is essentially "uninstalling" it from the Asus, leaving you free to use the full disk elsewhere.

The disk you can use on any computer. The license MUST be used with your Asus laptop.

You do know that you can clean install with an upgrade disk right?

Yeah, you're right, the OEM disc works with any OEM manufacturer, but unless you have a the appropriate key of the manufacturer, then it won't activate. So your ASUS key will only work on another ASUS, but yes, the disc will install on any pc. You'll still need a Dell key to install on a Dell, etc..

Alright, looks like we've already covered all the legal details of this one. A few posts have been deleted regarding piracy, and this thread is now closed.
