I am running a 32 bit Vista on my system which has limitation on the RAM upgrade, 3 to 3.5 GB or RAM at best that Vista will see. My GM965 chip set will take up to 4 GB of RAM but I need a 64 bit OS.
My plan is to upgrade my CPU to an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 Merom 2.2GHz Socket to get the 800MHz FSB. And then install 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) RAM, I would like to install 4 GB, but need 64 bit Vista for it.

im confused are you asking if you can update your os? i dont think so, i think you have to get a seperate key and reinstall that
-
Nope, you have to reinstall since the entire layout of how the OS works needs to be changed. Even if you could patch/change it, it would be ugly and inefficient, reinstall is the way to go, just make sure you have a 64-bit key (and DVD?).
-
No, all I have is a recovery CD that came with the laptop. So I would most likely have to buy a new copy and I don't think it would be worth it. Anyone?

Some people have reported a way to do this with the 64-bit Windows "Anytime Upgrade" DVD, which you can get for under $10. Try searching the forums for it. You'll still have to do a full reinstall... not an in-place upgrade.

If you already have a copy of Vista 32-bit, you DO NOT need to buy a new key for 64-bit. You do, however, need a 64-bit Windows "Anytime Upgrade" DVD, as swarmer said.
You can't upgrade your version of Vista (Premium->Ultimate, Premium->Business, etc), but you upgrade your version of Vista to 64-bit with the same key.
Can one convert/patch an existing 32 bit Vista to a 64 bit
