Can windows 7 be upgraded to windows 10

I received a new business laptop but it has a i7 7700hq in it and my old business laptop has windows 7. I was going to change the SSD over to the new one but I forgot that kaby lake cant run on win 7.

Can win 10 be upgraded from 7. The main issue I have if that I need to keep all of my user profiles that I have and all of the cookies. But the user profiles are a must to save.

 

The new laptop has the windows 10 key embedded in the UEFI. So you would need to wipe the SSD and install windows 10 using the media creation tool. The Activation will be automatic.

If your new laptop comes with Windows 10 on it, then that means it has a Windows 10 key embedded in the bios which means you have some options.

You can either put your old Windows 7 SSD into the new laptop, download a Windows 10 ISO and run the in place upgrade and you should be able to install and upgrade to Win10 right on the same old SSD and version of Windows you have, assuming you can get into Windows 7 on that machine, although you can probably boot into the ISO and do the upgrade outside of Windows as well.

You can back up your data, wipe the SSD and install it in the new laptop, then install Windows 10 fresh on the machine and it will automatically activate when it gets installed.

Keep the existing laptop with Windows 10 on it, and properly back up and transfer all data from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and not swap any hardware or anything and just transfer data.


I think your best option would be to swap the SSD from Windows 7 laptop, into the laptop with Windows 10, then do an in place upgrade and keep all existing things where they are. If this is a business laptop and you are connected to a domain, I do not know what issues you may run into doing this though. You may be dead in the water until your can get an admin to reauthenticate the new machine to the domain since all the hardware has changed even though it technically is the same build of Windows.

 

Some of you dont understand the I cant wipe the info on the old business laptop, the info is worth more than my house.

 

Kaby lake is a CPU if your laptop right now has it your own reply is twisted here your running W7 on a laptop with Kaby lake doesn't computer here.

Upgrading changes everything along with user profiles will change from W7. This request is sounding very fishy request from the read of all the conflicting information your providing.

Don't know how to upgrade take it to a computer shop to do this for you. Upgrading isn't a 1 hour job and not something one does with important information if your not going to backup those data.

You say we don't understand but I think we do. You might not understand us. Please answer this please...do you have a backup of all your files from your old work SSD laptop... Yes or no.

Is the only reason you want to put the SSD into the new laptop is because of the files or because you want a fast drive??

Upgrading to W10 is no easy task and can do some weird things so leaving your files on the SSD would not be very smart.

 

If the data is worth more than your house, there's no excuse for not having a backup as many have suggested. If you have a backup, try it out and find out!

 

Tbh upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10 is like a huge downgrade like everyone else said but anyways

Does your new laptop with Win10 already has a SSD like your old one? If so then all you have to do is transfer the stuff you wanna keep from your old laptop to either a flash drive or a cloud service to your new laptop without going through the trouble of upgrading your OS on your old one. Data can easily be transferred and stored to many other places and its basic task to do for any PC user incase anything happens

 

Whom? Sounds just like it's only you. But you forgot not all system that came with W7 can handle W10 upgrade and if you don't do your homework that isn't others fault that you didn't what is needed first. If you want a stable W10 that requires all new board that is UEFI/BIOS for W10 anything else is asking for trouble. The OP is missing alot of background knowledge to do what they are asking and worse their own line of request is convoluted and has mislabeled information to be of help.

 

How it is just me when others in this section post their own criticisms about the OS especially in the Windows 10 thread? I would bring up the many issues with Windows 10 but it's not what the OP was asking for. One thing you forgot to mention is that when upgrading to a new OS its best to do it with a clean install as you'll run into many issues otherwise, a common problem when upgrading with a older PC. If you read my post i asked the OP does his new laptop already has a SSD and if so he can transfer his data to his new Windows 10 laptop without wasting his time upgrading his old laptop to Windows 10. If the OP still wants to use his old SSD on his new laptop he would need to backup all of his data from his old laptop then wipe it and then put the SSD into his new laptop and then install a fresh copy of Windows 10.
