You'll be able to go to Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional. Lots of people in other threads here have called up Microsoft to confirm the upgrade paths.

Yep. Upgrade to whatever you want.

I think people are getting confused by the "free upgrade when you buy a computer" restrictions which are that you get the equivalent version free. I think Vista Basic doesn't even quality for the free upgrade.

When you pay for it though the world is your oyster, choose what you want.

I think people are also confused by "in-place upgrade", which can be done according to the upgrade path and does not require a clean install (thus saving data), and an upgrade that requires a clean install, which must be done when moving from a version of Vista or XP that doesn't allow an in-place upgrade.

Thanks everybody. Yes, what confused me was the free upgrade. They mentioned the free upgrade for all the other versions of Vista and XP but nothing was written near basic, so I thought I would ask. This is very good to know.

When I ordered my T400 a couple days ago, I accidentally chose to have Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit) installed. When I called this morning, the customer service representative said that this is the only version of Windows that Lenovo will NOT offer a free upgrade to Windows 7. So, I'm going to pay an additional $79 to upgrade to the 64-bit Premium version, which will give me a free upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows 7 when it comes out in the fall.

That's a waste of money. As long as Microsoft continues to sell 7 Premium upgrades for $49, you are throwing away $30. Just use Home Basic, and order the 7 Premium directly from Microsoft for $49.
