So my friend tried reformatting his computer with xp and after wiping the partition with xp it tried copying the files back over. The first file "hraidsk1" couldn't be copied as well as all subsequent files. Google isn't helping too much either. What's going on?

Your notebook model? Where are these files that your friend want to copy over coming from? How were they being created? ...

    cheers ...

If I am not ,mistaken, your friend is trying to use a notebook recovery disk on a desktop.

This might not work, not mentioning that it is "illegal" borderline. Sorry.

    cheers ...

Oh really? What's the difference between a notebook recovery disk and a desktop recovery disk? I never knew it mattered.

A recovery disk is system/model specific.

according to my friend, the recovery disk he used came with the dell desktop. so it wasn't mixed around or anything.
