On my network map, I can't see any XP computers (from my Windows 7 Ultimate), but I can see Vista computers. When I try to access shared folders on my WHS (same codebase as XP), the error message reads "Cannot open WHS shares. Please check the access permissions and try again." I know something is wrong on my Windows 7 computer since the Vista computer works fine and I can't see ANY Windows XP computers from Win 7. Any suggestions?

I've been sharing directories between my XP computers for years on my static LAN. After receiving my laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium, things became more complicated. While Windows 7 could see and access the XP computers directories almost immediately, the XP computers were not allowed to even see the Windows 7 directory. I finally fixed that so XP was allowed inside the Windows 7 directory.
I suppose one place to start is do you have all computers using the same Workgroup? Are the XP computers set up with Simple File Sharing? -
I had the same problem when I installed W7 on my laptop and fixed it with the information contained in the attachment which I archived but don't remember where I got it originally.
Edit: Oh, also make sure if you have an Internet Security program installed it is not blocking network access.Attached Files:

I tried the guide, no luck. I noticed some interesting things in the event log, if that would be any help?

Make sure they are in the same Workgroups and that you select the Home network option when creating the network.
Also, rerun the networking wizard on the XP computer. Make sure the XP computer is fully updated. -
If the XP computer has SP2, you should be fine as I'm not running that clunky SP3, and both XP and 7 see each other just fine. You may have tried the guide, but you haven't answer the questions?

Same workgroup and all, and I used to be able to see them just fine. Then I started having trouble with my ethernet not recognizing a cable was plugged in, so I reinstalled drivers. But sometime around then this started happening, whether I use wired or wireless.

In case someone else has this problem, I seemed to fix it by disabling and re-enabling the Windows Virtual PC network filter in the adapter properties.

Edit: I am not having any problems between my Win 7 and XP computers but found this interesting. Exactly where would I find this "Windows Virtual PC Network Filter" on the Win 7 box, it appears that it takes some registry tweaks to even turn it on, yes? -
I think it installed itself when I installed Windows Virtual PC for XP mode.
