Note: Tried searching. Couldn't find anything concrete.
I just got Windows 7 x64 installed last night. Everything is great except... I can't update it. I'll try to explain it.
So, one of the first things I did after installing drivers was windows update. It failed, stating a connection error or something. So I assigned all of the IP addresses and what not myself, and rebooted just to be sure. I can connect to the internet, I can access this site and what not, but windows update still persists in failing to start in both IE and Firefox. I couldn't get an error code either. I disabled UAC, turned off all firewalls, disabled all virus scanning and such... still nothing. I tried looking up my problem, but even in the Microsoft knowledge base it said to turn off firewalls. One solution it noted was that my windows updater could possibly be corrupted. That doesn't make any sense since it's a fresh install on an SSD. It isn't pirated either. It authenticated just fine.
My setup:
Clevo D901C
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650
4GB RAM
Dual 9800m GTX
SSD Boot Drive
2x storage drives
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Build 7600)
Router: Linksys WRT610N
Hopefully someone can help out. I couldn't get it to cough up an error code, but when I get home today I can try.

is your clock set wrong by any chance? windows update can't conect if the time is way off..
it's a fully random guess -
I've had the same problem on x86, so check the clock as davepermen says. Make sure the service "Windows time" is enabled and running
-
My clock is correct. "Windows Time" service is started. Still nothing. I managed to get an error code out of it. The error code is: "8024402F". Help.
Edit: It seems the router must have been reset from a power surge or something a few days ago... it had ActiveX filtering on. Doh... Lesson learned I guess. -

have you cleaned up the temporary download folder of windows update?

Nevermind, see above post... Let it be known that anything blocking ActiveX will prevent Windows Update from functioning.

looks like it still is an activex component, then. i thought so, but was unsure. but it makes sense, as it still works the same as it did in xp. just with an own ui surrounding it.
learned something, nice to know. some overly paranoid guy surely will disable activex on it's system and then cry how it doesn't work anymore
