    Hi guys,

I upgraded my LG Z360 ultrabook from Windows 8 to Windows 10. Since I wanted to clear out the old Win 8 files, I selected reset all option through the Windows 10's internal recovery. At 94% the installation froze and failed.

After the failed installation, I tried to reinstall windows using a Windows 8.1 downloaded from MS website and I burned it to a bootable USB through the latest Rufus tool. I picked GPT partition and Fat32 options.

When I boot through the bootable USB, the windows installation comes up with can't find any HDD. The issue is the bootable USB drive replaces my C:\.

Note - My HDD/SSD is still showing in the BIOS.

    Please help me.

    Thank you
    Sand.

    Hi guys,

Is there anyway I can stop the bootable USB drive essentially taking over in place of the my HDD? How can I have both just being assigned 2 different letters.

As mentioned above, when the USB is not plugged, the BIOS is showing my HDD/SSD.

    Thanks
    Sand.

I doubt the problem lies in what you say. Try the MBR Option maybe? Or disable safe boot in BIOS.
P.S. And I always set NTFS format BTW.

    Thanks James!

I have already tried all three partition options in Rufus including MBR. I've also tried NTFS.

Do you think it's an issue with my USB drive? I'm using Sandisk Cruzer U3 8GB. I.e. is this somehow overtaking my C:?

    So frustrating :(

It depends if the Windows 10 installer has your chipset driver installed. Or which is more likely that you using the wrong install mode ie UEFI or legacy .

Installing with Secure boot enabled, you must install though UEFI or the drives won't show up.
On some older systems, you might need to disable secure boot.

    Good Luck :)

Try without secure boot and set to legacy mode booting (if you can do it). If you can't, but you can access the windows (I guess you can't), but if you can i would just make installation within the windows with setup.exe.
If not, I would just boot from windows livecd like PE7 or PE10, (livecd you can find on the internet), and from there start the installtion with pendrive inserted in, it should go.

    Problems right away...
    1. GPT is for 2GB or larger drivers only MBR is for anything less then 2tb HDD
    2. Failed install usually means the HDD was most likely on it's way out.
    3. Note - Which drive are you referring to the HDD or SSD that had the O/S?
    4. Which drive are we talking about for the install the SSD or HDD?

    GB != TB.

And doesn't gpt still work fine below 2TB?

Gpt works for any capacity of hdd so it's just a bs.
    Mbr is obsolete for now.

Look when you format in Windows it will recommend GPT for 2GB.
For smaller drivers MBR is what goes as you get larger Drives above 2TB Windows recommend GPT.

That don't have any impact, gpt or mbr to have larger disk space below 2TB, or if it is it's marginal, a few kb.
MBR is only there, because disk are often in MBR so it's for compatibility reasons, because to not reformat all hard disk
