Hi, i have a 320gb hard drive with vista, i resized it to about 50gb smaller and installed linux on it. i got rid of linux and erased that partition into unallocated space. now i want to add that 50gb to my main partition, but vista won't let me add the free space to my partition.
i also tried acronis disk director to add the free space but it wouldn't let me
Help! i need to do it!

Try EASEUS partition master Home ed. it´s pretty good.

What is the layout of your current drive partition? A screen shot of the disk management?
cheers ... -
ummm. basically, 260gb, on the left, 10gb of recovery in the middle, and 65or so gb unallocated on the right
-
The 10gb of recovery is literally in the middle of the space you're trying to tack onto the main partition. Try using a tool like Gparted to manually move the partitions around and then to increase the size. Be warned, it probably will take awhile.

+1 for Gparted. It's the way to go.

Gparted is the way to go as mentioned above. Trying to increase your main partition within windows is a pain at the best of times, and impossible most!!!

I used partition wizard to dual boot 7 and it worked fine.

I don't know about you guys, but moving partitions is a risky operation. Every time I've done it (by accident) Gparted has either encountered an error or rendered the partition unbootable.
-
I have done it several times with Acronis Disk Director 10 and luckily never encountered a problem. You are right though, I hold my breath until the operation is finished as I am fearful of the final result. Sort of like flashing Bios
Alas, it is not a free program though and no trial available with full functionality.

Different program, right? I've never used Acronis DD, but I was referring to the reliability of GParted in moving partitions which has always failed me. Still, thanks for pointing me to Acronis.

Regardless of what app you use, it is very much a risky proposition. I have never attempted it without having an image of ALL partitions involved before I started. Because I have the images at hand, it is then usually quicker to just use the restore of the images to actually move the partitions around. I just delete the partitions and then restore them in the new order.

I've recently used GParted to shrink and move partitions without any problem.
From C:/25GB E:/25GB F:/100GB to 15GB/15GB/120GB
It was quite an operation because I had to shrink C:/, then add those 10GB to E:/, shrink E:/ and then add the 20 GB to F:/
It took a while but it went flawless, after finishing and rebooting, the whole setup works just like before editing the partitions.
I used the most recent version of GParted; 0.4.6.1.ISO and had images of both OS partitions ready in case of a mishap but they weren't needed.
So in my case, +1 for GParted.
Can't increase space on my partition
