I've been trying to make the Intel PROSet wireless utility the default wireless management program on my notebook but either my Vista 64-bit isn't letting me or I'm not doing something right.
I've reinstalled the latest version from the Intel site a bunch of times, and I've even tried older versions, including the one that came with my Sager NP2096. Every single time that it installs, I never see the actual Intel PROSet wireless utility - I only get 2 of its components which are the wifi advanced statistics tool and the wifi manual diagnostics tool.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Is the PROSet software compatible with Vista x64?
-
Yeah it asks me for the OS before I can download it. As soon as I choose Vista Home 64-bit, the next page shows a download link for the software.
-
Yep, having the same issue with my Sony.
You might want to try to disable (remove) the manufacturer's wireless management app first before installing the PROSet. I did not do this, because Sony management software is being bundled with other stuffs that I need.
cheers ... -
The Intel PROSet wireless utility is what came with my notebook originally, but after doing a clean install, I never installed it back. Now I need it but it won't install no matter what I do.
-
For those it is not working for, can you be more specific about the problem? When does the install fail, do you get any kind of message? -
It never worked in my Sony too. I use the built in Vista utiltity.

When I went from XP to Vista, I noticed that I was able to install the software and drivers but, while the drivers ran ok, the management software simply did not run.
This led me to believe that Vista is intercepting all connection management from these applications and preventing them from running.
This is not an intel card only issue.
However, I must say that I travel a lot and connect to all kinds of wifi connections all over the world and the Vista connection manager seems to work perfectly. It recognizes the proper connection security type and prompts for the password correctly. Not all of those applications are able to do the same without some manual tweaking from time to time. -
Hello!
I am having the exact same problem with my new sony vaio tt 150n.
Is there a solution?
I went down this path, b/c the vista wireless utility had the "save password" field grayed out after enetering credentials for our work wifi. It just never connected after multiple attempts -
It's hard to diagnose a problem like that because there could be many reasons why the connection fails. -
I am having the same issue. Did anyone figure this out?
-
same here, I cant get the utility to install! Either on vista business x86 or beta versions of windows 7.
go figure!
I have a sony vaio tz195 -
