Apparently this file was corrupted so I uninstalled it. Now I have downloaded it from the MS site, but my system keeps saying it can't be installed because it is already installed. Driving me crazy I am running Win 7 64bit.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Maybe try out RevoUninstaller, that may search for all the leftover files and delete them. Then try and reinstall.

All this "maybe this will work, maybe that will work" are just shots in the dark. I have had to deal with this issue on a handful of my clients machines. The only solution was to uninstall ALL versions of .NET and then reinstall them. Make note of what versions you have, use this tool to uninstall all of them, and then reinstall them in version number order.

Automated cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 - Aaron Stebner's WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Yes, you do want to install all of them again as some applications you have installed may rely on a specific version of .NET even though there is SUPPOSED to be backward compatibility in some versions to prior ones. The apps may not be aware of this and refuse to work.

Thanks much Gary I did uninstall now, but now a different problem. Every time I download the .net framework I keep getting error messages saying I need to go to control panel and in Windows features turn on/off something So I put a check mark in the boxes I think but still can't download it.

Your reply is so vauge that I have NO IDEA what to suggest. "Turn on/off something", "in the boxes I think" tells me nothing at all. Be specific. What did it tell you EXACTLY? What did you check EXACTLY?

You ARE correct Too vague. I am running 64bit Windows 7 on An ASUS G60

EXACT error message: You must use "Turn Windows features on or off in the control panel to install or configure Microsoft .net framework version 3.0"

I didn't add the quotation marks. This is the Exact message.

In Control panel it says the following: To turn a feature on, select its check box. I selected the box next to .NET Framework. Does that give enough detail?

    That was easy:

The .NET Framework 3.0 redistributable language packs and the .NET Framework 2.0 redistributable language packs are not designed for use with Windows Vista-based computers

Did a quick google search on the error message and found the above link.

    Here are additional links:
