    Hi,

My DVD player just died and I have been trying to watch rental DVDs on my laptop and I can't!

I am running Win7 and I am unable to watch DVDs. I tried windows media player, VLC and Power DVD and nothing works.

One interesting fact is, I have an old XP machine and I was able to play the DVD without any problems! I must be doing something wrong. Anybody has an idea?

    Any help is welcome!

Are you receiving any error messages from the programs you're trying? What kind of feedback are you getting? Without this kind of information, we really can't help you.

    Thanks for the reply guys.

    Yes the DVD player works.
As for the different software I tried:

VLC plays it but it seems all crypted (bunch of squares) and jerky

Windows media player 12 :"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

PowerDVD 8.1 : just shows the name of the movie but does nothing.

Make sure that the DVD Region of the DVD and the one set in the drive are matching.

Ok, this was a region problem. I do have a problem though. I telework 4 months a year to Europe. I used a software called dvd region killer on my XP machine and it worked but I guess it is not working with Win7. Do you guys know a software I can use because I only have 1 chnage left.

Actually, if there is a software removing this whole region business all together that would be best. I don't think people think about people living in a foreign country and going home and wanted to watch dvds from home when they come up with sh*&^ system like that.
