    Hello everyone,

I returned an HP spectre x360 to BestBuy the other day because of some issues I was having with it but before doing so I created a Windows Image Backup (I went to File History and created a system image which included all the drives except for the one that I am backing up to).

I now have a new HP spectre x360 and I want to restore all the original files from my Windows Image Backup but when I enter the recovery menu (Troubleshoot --> Select a system image backup --> Use the latest available system image), it says that I need to create a system repair disc.

But the spectre x360 doesn't have a CD drive so I can't do it! I keep getting an error that the system repair disc could not be created.

I tried making my Seagate GoFlex External Hard Drive into a bootable USB using RUFUS but that doesn't work.

    The screen looks like this:

    Can anyone help me?

If your notebook does not have a DVD/CD Drive:

    1, Buy an external usb 2 ,3 dvd/cd drive- $15-30 on e bay or
    2. Make recovery drive on usb flash drive 4GB---$5.-----newest trend ---
    3. buy a dvd drive with bracket and install in notebook, remove blank plate---highest cost---

Make USB flash drive recovery drive:

    ,
This really is the best way to go. Booting from a USB thumb drive always gave me problems.

One of the few reasons to actually have an optical drive.

Edit: Before you try what I described below, hold down the SHIFT key while clicking reboot in Windows, this should give you recovery options.
    ___________________________

To start the recovery you need a System repair disc, or a Windows 10 installation USB Drive.
The latter can do the same work as the former.

IIRC, Rufus and Windows own tools doesn't play nice with USB HDDs. You need a different program.

Download the ISO from my sig (not to your Seagate drive), use WinSteupFromUSB (which works with HDDs, read step 1- 5, pick FAT32) and your Seagate drive. When the ISO is copied, close the program and copy the system image to the same USB HDD in Explorer.

After booting the USB HDD (you may have to reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Del) the laptop once to be able to see the USB HDD in the boot menu due to the HDD not spinning up fast enough), select language, click Next, then Repair your computer, then follow the instructions.

Oh and don't buy a DVD drive, you're better off with a USB flash drive. I've been booting from USB drives hundreds of times and it rarely gives me issues. Floppys, punched cards and DVDs aren't needed anymore, even though some people still prefer them.

Use a different program for making a system image next time, maybe Macrium Reflect.

Still doesn't beat holding down Shift while restarting.

Yes, your advice is valuable, but is more of a last resort to solve this issue. The quest for a DVD drive all started because Windows still asks for a CD/DVD when creating the optional System Repair Disc, when it's not really needed. So far there's no sign of having to buy a DVD drive.

    - If the Recovery Partition is intact and works as expected (after all, this is a brand new laptop), the OP can hold down Shift while rebooting and restore from a System Image. The CD that never got burned in the first post would have been pretty much the same thing as the 300 MB Recovery partition.
    - Otherwise, you can use a Windows installation ISO on a USB drive, even a USB HDD as described above. Again, it would to the same thing as the other options above.

This whole thread is part of why some people say that Windows is complicated even when it's not. Simple, useful ways to solve issues aren't that well known, even though this thread has contributors with a lot of experience.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no better. I had to google Shift Reboot, and try it out, because I've never used it. :p

Update,, when running external usb devices thru usb hubs, "get with"--- cheaper hubs max out at 1 amp for several ports, in other words they are taxed to the limit, get a usb hub that has 1 amp per port, this is usb 3.0 standard,, I got caught on this and dumped cheaper ones and got better ones

here s one I just bought from plugable-its flagship USB 3 powered Hub it has 7 ports and each port gets 1.5A and has a smart charging controller that runs it, its runs from a power brick 60W. and charge almost everything.

Now no power is used thru usb ports all supplied externally. heres the link.

    Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Supe...ugable+7-Port+USB+3.0+SuperSpeed+Hub+with+60W

USB 3.0 7-port Hub (VIA Hub Controller), 12V 5A 60W UL certified AC desktop-style power adapter with 9+ foot hub to wall extension cord and 3 foot USB 3.0 Cable.

yes,Amazon has fedex or ups shipping some times-longer delay, ect, I ordered thru ebay got it today, the owner Bernie Thompson,Founder, Plugable Technologies sent a welcome email and sent from amazon and got it delivered thru usps, ordered saturday, got today-following monday and installed it, works fine, on the new sealed box under features-it shows supports 12A @ 60watts thru all ports. No of stressing of anything plugged in and now no power being supplied by the mobo usb 3 port, usb devices 2.0/1.1 are supported , can be used a standalone charger as well. Bernie even flashed this device up with the latest firmware for most compatibility of devices with it.

OP, We are not trying to hijack your thread, just provide answers, in this post answers with new tested hardware-one plugable techs flagship usb 3 Superspeed Hub and charger,lol.. :)

So, usb dvd/cd drive and sufficient external powered usb hub will get the job done, I have also a Belkin 4 port USB 3 Superspeed hub as well and its a 4A model(non charger), 1 amp for each port--USB 3 Standard, I have a couple of laptops set up.

The usb hubs without external power get there power from the mobo usb port, the more devices connected the more power, the mobo usb controller has to supply, it will get hot.
Usb hubs with out external power are called bus powered usb hubs.

An external, especially a BR burner, should not be powered by th laptops USB port. So a powered hub is a great idea. I can tell you that hub is outstanding.

Update------I got the drive I listed it would not burn dvd's, it would read them yet not burn. it had nero buring rom 8---2007 very dated skip it, get something better.

I went to Bestbuy and got a LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer-DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black-this does everything, cost $27 out the door, it comes with all needed software and LG installs firmware update program for it, 1 yr warranty, expedited returns to buyer, ect This one is the real deal, tested it burns dvd's really well and comes with cyberlink media 10-free, youcam, ect. One cord, no need for separate power cord.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-ultr...lack/5407064.p?id=1219650452864&skuId=5407064

Yes tanware I agree and the plugable usb 3 plus charger is working well...

These USB ports are for one device only and not meant to power a usb hub or power hungry devices, using a external powered usb hub is the way to go and get a very good one, 1A per port for sure is necessary, plugables flagship usb 3 hub and charger meets the specifications plus some, glad I got one.

    Cheers
