I am dual-booting xp and vista and I cannot get ahci to work in vista. I did not do the F6 thing upon installing vista - stupid me. I also used the method described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976
... and the registry was already set to this value. Enabling ahci in the bios simply makes vista endlessly reboot-no BSOD's, just reboots. Ahci works perfectly under xp though. I also downloaded intel matrix manager, but it wouldn't install, saying "this computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements..." or something like that.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi.

Have you tried doing a system restore in safe mode?

You might want to give this a try. Install the AHCI drivers on a USB drive. Boot up with the Vista DVD. At the drive options screen install your AHCI drivers there via the USB drive, then reboot. That should work. :)

With Vista, you don't need to press F6 though. When you installed Vista, you installed it while in Compatibility Mode? That's only required for installing XP, but not for installing Vista.

Anyway, since you've already installed Vista, I will see what I can find to fix this and get back to you.

Ok, please follow this guide with step-by-step instructions. VERY IMPORTANT, make sure you find out if your laptop is using the ICH8(R) southbridge or the ICH9(R) southbridge first, then follow the right section of the instructions. Since AHCI is working in XP, make sure in the BIOS is set to AHCI, then boot into XP, go to Device Manager, expand "System devices", there you can see if it's ICH8(R) or ICH9(R). Now, go back into the BIOS and change it back to Compatibility Mode, boot into Vista, and follow the instructions in the link above.

By the way, the drivers download links in that guide is old, you should download the latest version instead.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice stewie, but I followed the directions but when the directions say to reboot and change the ahci setting, vista still reboots endlessly. Oh well. ATA works fine, it's no big deal.

    Thanks anyway all.
