Okay, I have been using ubuntu for almost 2-3 weeks now, none stop, didnt really bother to use vista, besides doing a vista clean install, then letting it sit there. But ubuntu doesnt seem to be able to control my fans properly (the fans turn on when the processor is 79C+!) so i am not going to risk my hardware being fried. But im not here for that issue.

Coming to vista again, I wanted something similar to conky
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=279492

So while following the links crash gave me, I installed rainmeter. Then when I wanted to install the skin, I had to create a new text file (or edit an existing one) in the correct skins folder, it is somewhere under Program Files.

I went to the C:\Program Files\Rainmeter\Skins, did Right Click -> New, and to my surprise the only option there was to create a folder! And the icon next to "Folder" is not that usual folder icon, but that windows security shield icon. Everywhere else on my computer, desktop, D partition, etc. when I Right Click -> New I have many options, including new folder, text file, etc. It is just the C partition were I cannot.

Using Ubuntu for the last few weeks, I keep thinking "sudo" and "gedit" (as I mentioned in the other post) but I know vista doesnt have that, besides the asking for Admin permission, which isnt a big deal.

Now the thing is, I can install new programs fine. I can even copy and paste files into there. Just Right Click -> New will not let me make anything but a folder.

    Any idea whats up?

    Thx

EDIT: Oh and when I try to edit, lets say a text file, that is located any where in the C drive, when I hit save it tells me "Cant Create XXXX. Make sure file name and path are correct." When I hit "Save As" and try to copy over that file, it tells me its Read only. I tried to turn off "Read Only" by right click properties in Program Files, but it wont do it. I turn it off, click Apply -> Okay but it just goes back to normal. Nice welcome back to vista lol.

    Update
I ran CCleaner, and a virus scan via Kaspersky. I uninstalled all of the "new" programs that I had installed that I had never used before on windows, aside from Pidgin and ObjectDock. Didnt help.

Try changing the security options / permissions for the user in C: from the 'properties' of C:

The same happens if you right-click in 'program files' inside C:

And also see if enabling 'write' will help. I just checked on my system, now I can see (with just write enabled, but modify disabled) all the options on right-click > new....

But still I cannot make a text file, but I can create a folder as before.. which is the same when u try to do something within system folders like program files or windows etc I guess...

So I guess if you enable complete permissions or modify you should be able to create a text file or others...

I tried giving my self full permission. A lot of things "denied permission" and the end result didnt change.

Yes so? I gave "Lakjin" "Full Control" for "C:\" to see if that would fix my problem. It didnt, so I changed it back.

Okay I went back did gave "Lakjin" "Full Control" In Program Files, and that fixed my problem there. I can now create new text files, etc. in Program Files. But I did go back and change it since I dont want to mess with anything without fully knowing what its doing.

Now the question becomes, how can I do the same for the C drive? W/e I try to give "Lakjin" full control, it goes to applying security permission to files, and many files come up as "access is denied" as in permissions could not be changed.

My vista has always only had new folder as the only option under "new" when I am in c: programs, but it is a normal yellow folder. I have to go to a subfile like documents and right click and go to new before I have a bunch of options. I am not sure you are supposed to have more options while in the program file. Perhaps you don't really have a problem with it other than it is giving you the shield folder instead of a yellow normal one.

    What do other people have?

I am trying to show an attachment of mine next to Lakjin's for comparison. Don't know if it will work. For what its worth, my vista install has been stable for over a year. I doubt he needs to reinstall. Would be nice to have more options though.

I'm using Premium SP1, I get tons of options when I mouse over new in any folder, drive, you name it.

I did do a clean install of Vista right when I got my laptop though.

Can you look under properties -> security and tell us what permissions are set to what?

What I am gunna do right now is make the permissions for the users for the C partition the exact same as the D partition.

I also did a clean install. I have many times actually. But this is the first time I have come across this issue.

Anyway, this is what I did to solve my problem (i think I solved it)

    Under C:\ and C:\Program Files
Right Click -> Properties -> Security -> Edit

For C:\ I have this listed for Group or user names:
Authenticated User (check all but Full Control and Special Permission)
SYSTEM (Check all but Special Permission)
Administrators (Check all but Special Permission)
Users (Check all but Full Control, Modify, Write, Special Permission)

For C:\Program Files I have this listed for Group or user names:
Authenticated User (check all but Full Control and Special Permission)
SYSTEM (Check all but Special Permission)
Administrators (Check all but Special Permission)
Users (Check all but Full Control, Modify, Write, Special Permission)
TrustedInstaller (Only Check List Folder Contents)

I hope this doesn't pose any security risks.

I had to give permissions to authenticated users in c: to get all the new options. I did not bother to change the permissions in program files since I don't want to edit them at this time.

    Thanks lakjin and Andy.

Ahhhhhh, dammit. I am confused a bit now.

What are the default security settings for C: and the folders inside, apart from the hidden or system folders?

And is 'write' enabled by default?

I think I messed around this a way too much and now I have no idea. :( :(

    You mean write caching..??

I have full permissions for C:\, but the owner is TrustedInstaller
    ss.jpg

    Do you have SP1 installed..??

    Thanks for your reply.

write caching?????  whats that? I meant 'write' as in the 'write' option in security settings.. like read, write, modify, etc.

    Yes I have SP1.

    But I think fixed it..

For the admin / system it was all enabled.

So, in C: and C > program files for example, For users/xxxx it was only read and execute.. no write before. But somehow I think I might have enabled 'write' in the security. so I just changed it back, meaning, disabled write for 'users/xxxx' and now all is well and like the previous settings I saw.

I just wanted to keep it that way for the moment, because I didn't want to mess around with any of those system /restricted folders even by mistake. thanks anyway.
