I cracked my eeepc screen and have been using an external. Stupidly I went to reinstall XP as I was having driver issues. Now I cannot see the install screen, i just hear the jingly music. The XP load screen displays, but once it gets to the profile setup part the monitor turns off.

Ive tried the fn monitor buttons but no luck.

    Any ideas?

Very often, the secondary display is only useable after the VGA drivers have been installed. Same applies to the Fn-keys which also need some additional drivers or software installed.

You might need the eeePC's screen fixed before you can do anything.

Maybe you could try opening up the netbook and disconnect the LCD connectors from the mainboard then if your lucky the machine will default to the external monitor.

idk. I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference which end you disconnected.

When I have taken Acer / HP laptops apart I have been able to connect power, power switch, hard drive and external VGA monitor directly to the mainboard and boot with the external VGA monitor and no laptop LCD. Handy for trouble shooting / modifying.

When the laptop is "together" as normal there is no BIOS setting/key to switch to an external VGA while booting. It needs an OS to make the switch.

Just a thought, have you tried F8 and force VGA to see if it makes a difference?

what about loading Windows XP with the VGA drivers integrated into the install?

Easy enough to use nlite to create a custom XP install disk....
