Try refreshing the desktop - with all windows minimized, hit F5 or right click and select refresh.

try right clicking on it and hit add to archive, then check off delete files after archiving, then you should have a zip file. then try deleting the zip file. i had an icon i couldn't delete once and this worked. im using win rar dunno if you have it, probably work with win zip too.

you can also try to delete it with the command prompt. open it up type "cd (the directory of your desktop mine is C:\Users\Jesse\Desktop)" then type "del (file name with extension"

@christ the tiger i cant send you a pm for some reason and i don't wanna discuss the theme in this thread do you have an email or something i can send it to you

JDogg, can I get get a buddy request from you? I need to ask you what Vista skin you had in YOUR "Desktop Folder Won't Delete" thread, from January 22nd.

As far as deleting the desktop icon, you could try deleting the Desktop folder, located at C:\(your user account)\Desktop, and making a new one. I recently encountered the same problem, which is how I stumbled upon JDogg's thread from a while back, and that seemed to work.

Its probably because its a new account and I don't have enough post count.

Anyways, Campe, making a new Desktop folder didn't work? It worked twice for myself. Go to C:\Users\(your name) and delete the Desktop, then make a new folder called Desktop. It should work, since it'd eradicate the entire desktop, but you should probably save all of the other icons before you delete the folder.

You could also try changing your display depth from 32bit to 16bit, reboot, and then switch back to 32bit. I had an odd icon issue a while ago, and rebuilding the icon cache didn't work, but that little switch did the trick.

Ok. I give up on just about everything. I still have the OS Disk that came with my Gateway. If i use that disk and re-install the OS, will i still have all the stuff that came with my laptop? Such as the Camera Assistant software and Gateway Games and stuff?

Did you try changing the screen depth (32-16-reboot-32 bit)? And did you try the other link I provided?

Have you tried creating a file so the shortcut has something to point to? Go to wherever the location of the file was, and make a new file with the old name.

You could also create a new user with admin rights, log in with the new user, then browse to the old user's desktop and see if you can delete the shortcut.

Before you delete the olduser, makesure you save all the data

I am pretty surprised unlocker didn't work. Without reading everything, did you boot into safe mode with command prompt and try deleting it with the trusty old del command

I would buy a new screen as that way your guarenteed to get rid of it, sell your other screen on ebay and just put in the description that it comes with a slight fault where an icon is stuck to the screen that won`t go away. Its not your problem then.

It would be rather roundabout, but could you burn a live CD of say Ubuntu and delete the shortcut using that? That way there's no way Windows can block its removal since it's not running. Might be worth a shot.

No, the programs are not deleted. Only the data that resides in that user's profile will be deleted. For example, any files in the My Documents directory will be deleted.

That won't delete anything that isn't user-specific (e.g., documents and apps that were only installed for that one user, not all users); on top of which, if you installed anything under that user account for all users, you may find yourself stuck with what I would call "orphaned" files (and registry keys) that are associated with a now-nonexistent "owner" with the result that, if the file or the registry key is a sensitive security issue, you may not be able to either delete or change the file or key, and may be prevented from doing certain updates.

just delete it in command using the icons direct path. I did this for a pesky icon before.
