There are two types of partition style: MBR or GPT. If you were running UEFI and wanted to switch back to legacy BIOS you'll need to convert the drive to MBR.

    Convert

Don't know about the free dos.

What are you installing from, DVD or USB device?
If USB you'll need to make your usb compliant using Rufus to create the bootable installation files. Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way
You're sounding desperate but I don't think this is going to be as quick as you'd like.
You should probably use the CLEAN command and let window installer setup your drives.

Shift + F10 at the language selection screen for command prompt.

Make sure you select the correct disk - that'd be the one you're installing windows onto.

    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
    SELECT DISK 0
    CLEAN
    CONVERT MBR

Here's some links that may help you straighten things out if you're still stuck out there:
UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8
    Clean Install - Windows 8

I know how confusing this stuff gets, especially if you don't have a lot of time available to figure it out. I was just looking something up and remembered where these tutorials were.

Good luck with it. It doesn't sound like the machine hardware is broken, just the installation instructions/requirements.

EDIT: Also, see option two: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26193-convert-mbr-disk-gpt-disk.html
