I'm getting really annoyed that i cannot turn off Windows AutoUpdate in Vista Home Premium...
The box where you can choose what you want to do is greyed out and i do not know why it wont let me turn this option off.

I have tried searching google for ways to give myself full admin privileges and i have tried them but i still apparently do not have the rights to turn this option off?

I dont have this problem on my other computers or in the past with XP or 7...

Look in the following registry location for the AUOptoins value

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

    set it to 1.

ok im there.. do i set the "Default" to 1? right now it says value not set

and setting it to 1 will turn off auto update?

and there is no way for me to do this without going into the registry for Vista?

Not sure why it is locked out for you, that's the weird part. Are you using the built-in administrator account (which by default is disabled) or another account that is part of the administrators group?
1 should set it to never check for updates.

Yea i would like to know why im locked out as well.

I have enabled the built in Admin account and that didn't let me take auto update off, and i also gave my own account full admin access and that wont let me take auto update off.. It is really weird that the drop down box is greyed out...

so i disabled Windows Update service from startup in msconfig.. now it will not update at all correct?

    Winkey + R
    Services.msc
    Find Windows Update
    Goto its settings
    Set it to disabled

Managing services via. msconfig is not the correct way.

But yes, without that service, i couldn't imagine Winupdate being able to get anything done... Still a weird issue you have there.

Ok thanks. it is now disabled.

Yes, a very weird issue... I'd love to know how to solve it.. but if i cant find a solution, i plan on doing a clean install of Vista or upgrading it to windows 7 anyway.

Maybe it's something in the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) that has been configured to disallow users to change update settings... Yet that seems unlikely, because yeah, you've tried the admin account.

Then spending time on that would be a waste of time... Live with it as it is now, or come over to the bright side with Windows 7 :p

If not Windows 7, a clean install of Vista should fix this.
