    QUOTE:

Okay, so I downloaded the free trial version of Winrar yesterday. Today I saw an icon on my desktop and clicked it. This would be the icon: .

After doing so, my firewall (Comodo Firewall Pro) popped up (as it always does with new things) and asked if I wanted to allow the program. I selected yes, checking the box to always allow it and selecting the option to treat is as an "other application" or something like that...

Now every time I try to open something using my start menu or desktop, I get

I tried restarting my computer. Nothing happened.

if you have not installed x64 software it sounds like your computer caught some malware... ( not sure), sounds rather strange whats happening.

    1. where did you get that version of winrar ? from rarsoft ? or did you download it somewhere else ?

    2. do you use commodo as a firewall ? // edit, i have not read closely enough ... you do have commodo as your firewall. there might be a problem with commodo. try switching commodo off and see if it helps. i think i have read a thread where the op faced the same problem ( not a valid win32 application) out of nowhere... and the culprit was in his case the firewall.

Not a direct solution for your problem but try using 7-Zip.

Its an free open source solution for .rar files. Also 7-zip holds the best compression ratio for thier zipped files afaik.

    Try this -

Go to Start - Run and type in Regedit, and click Ok. You will see registry editor program show up. Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - System - CurrentControlSet - Control[/COLOR]. Scroll down to the bottom and check if you can see a key named WOW. If it's missing, then that will be the cause of the problem. Copy (export) the entire key from a good Windows XP machine and then import it to your system. Or copy the following text to a notepad and then save as any file name with extension .reg (for example - IPlanToKillThisProbleamAsItSleeps.reg). Double click the file from Windows Explorer to import the key.

PLEASE BACK-UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE DOING THIS!

Never seen this happened with WinRAR, and WinRAR shouldn't ask for firewall permission. Where did you download the trial?

No, I think WinRAR didn't ask anything, the FireWall asked if he wants it to run, which is normal.

in yur second pic...you've got the path for you to find the file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspaint\.exe)...trace it down and check the properties of the file...version...name...original name..etc...etc...google them...to see what you've got
