Hi guys, I was wondering if you guys could help me out to capture Hi-8 analog video in an editable format and then transfer the video to DVD.

I already have the necessary capture device, now I just need a way to capture the video in an editable video format. Unfortunately, the software that the device came with captures directly to DVD video format which makes it unsuitable for editing.

I also tried capturing with Virtual Dub in RAW AVI format but the files were huge and no way would a video editing program open such a huge file. Maybe I've missed a setting or a program that would allow me to capture to a different format.

My goal is to capture 180 minute tapes to 8GB or less for burning to dual-layer DVD's.

I want to give the finished DVD's to my parents as a Christmas gift so if you guys could just help me out a bit here. Thanks guys! Hope you all have a great Holiday season. :)

You need something that works with MPEG or MPEG-2

I know that "PowerDirector" (Power DVD manufacturer) does that...

Basically - you want MPEG as compression for a reasonable size and decent quality - have a look around your software.
