I have a HP Pavilion dv6449us that I got from my son recently and of course, its registered in his name. I want to change it to my name, so when I save stuff it will show Debi instead of Louis... ect.

Is there any way to do this, since it drives me crazy trying to figure out where stuff goes to, instead of my name only. I hope I am explaining this right!

    Thanks for any help!

It sounds like your not talking about product registration, but about the User Account name (which happens to be your son's)

The easiest way to do this is to simply change the account name:

    In Vista:

Open Control Panel from the start menu

Type User Accounts into the search box in the upper right corner of the Control Panel window

Click "User Accounts" in the search results

Click "Change your account name" (and click through the UAC prompt if displayed)

Enter the new name then click "Change Name"

    _________________________________________________________________________________________

    In Windows XP:

Click Start, then click on the user account picture in the upper blue band on the start menu, next to the user name.

Under the heading “Or pick an account to change,” click your user account name.

Click the "Change my name" option.

Enter the new name and then click "Change Name"

Note: In Windows XP (It might happen in Vista as well, not sure) you may still notice some parts (like folder names) will still have the old name. If this is bothersome, you might want to create a new user account with the user account name of your choice, and move your documents there. :)

I did that already before you told me this info, but my name is under Desktop then all my files etc. Now when I go under Computer it has Local Disk (C): and has a folder names Louis and it is completely the same stuff as under my name, since I tested it by adding a folder names TEST and it appears under both. So I thought, okay, just delete the folder names Louis and when I said delete, it said, are you sure DEBI you want to send this to the recycle bin....I thought, why did it ask my name DEBI instead of Louis....this is confusing me....a lot! How can I rid my entire machine of my son's name but still keep my stuff under my name? Also my son cleared everything from the laptop with his files etc. so thats why I changed my name first, but when I save it goes through Louis then me? Thanks for any help in this! God bless!

Oh by the way, under computer then USERS it only has Louis and Public and not my name? Why? So everything I save will go under Louis/Debi/...etc.?

It'll go under Lewis, because the user name change doesn't change the name of the users folder. If you hit "Yes" to that Recycle Bin question earlier, it's important that you go back to Recycle Bin, right click the Louis folder, and then click Restore. That way you won't lose all of your personal files. ;)

If you want, you can create a new user account in your name by returning to the User Accounts control panel. You won't have to worry about reinstalling any software or anything like that, they'll all show up.

Once you created the new user account, you can return to the old account, copy your documents, photos, etc. to the "public" folder you talked about earlier (just create new folders within the public folder with names like Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Videos, etc. and drag your items from the Louis folders (Click Start, then the name right below the User Account photo to open that set of folders) into those respective public folders) then switch to your newly created account.

Once there, open the public folder, open those subfolders you created in the public folder and drag your stuff into the folders (documents, videos, etc.) that Windows created for your new user account. You can easily get to those by clicking Start then clicking your name.

Once you double checked that you copied everything from the public and Louis folders, you can delete the items from the public folder (empty them from your recycle bin as well to give you back some Hard Drive space) and then go to Control Panel then User Accounts to delete the account you renamed earlier.

    Good Luck :)

So will this then rid my pc of Louis totally or will it always be there? Also, I am the admin when I set up my account by overwriting Louis...since when I login to my pc, its only me there? I guess I am very confused on this stuff! So sorry to bother you or anyone else that may reply, but I don't want Louis any where in my pc...if you know what I mean! Thanks and I just wanted to make sure I was going to rid my pc with the name Louis!

LOL! No problem, once you follow the second set of instructions I gave you (creating a new, administrative, user account with your name and dragging your personal files into it. And deleting the other account) you'll be all set. :)
