    Is there anyway to override the default program icons that load into the taskbar? I want to use one specific icon set to clean up the appearance a bit.

    That's not what he was talking about: He meant the taskbar icons, not the ones in the notification area.

    I think you can change those by changing the icon of the shortcut they originate from. So the procedure would be, remove the taskbar icon you have now, change the icon of the shortcut in your start menu, and then pin that to the taskbar.
