Here is a nice guide. I too recommend the educational discount route because the when I look up the price (and converted it to Cdn) it is $1375 but I can got the entire suite from campus for only $270.

Do you need it for school or are you just looking for an imaging software? If just for personal use and not for school I would recommend GIMP as it is totally free and does just as much as PSP and photoshop.

A lot of times on ebay they will sell an older version of Photoshop with an upgrade copy of CS which is significantly cheaper than the full version.

Sometimes you can find a one-day / 2 evening private PS class for cheap that would qualify you for the student rate on the software. There's also Elements, which supposed to be pretty good if you don't need all the bells and whistles of PS at a fraction of the price.

Elements is about $30-50 on eBay and about 80% of Photoshop. Good way to try it without paying a lot.

You can also try out GIMP (gnu image manipulator) its not as good as Photoshop but its better than paint :) lol. Completely free (both financially and for tinkering)

That is what I use personally.

well, the options have been stated. either a) take a course or something to be eligible to buy the educational version, costs ~$300. IIRC this is not supposed to be used for business activities anyway. Or b) look for a cheap legal old version of Photoshop, then buy the CS2 upgrade - upgrade costs $150-$175. Some places sell something like Photoshop 6 with the CS2 upgrade in seperate packages for ~$350-400.

Serious photographer or not, you should just read up on the feature differences between the different versions. You probably won't even need them, I've found myself being able to use 7 fine

CS2 in an incredible software version. I just want a legal version so that I will be in the lifetime upgrade path. It just gets better and better- but you pay for it!

I own CS2, and use CS at work. IMO there are some significant upgrades in CS2 (lens correction, vanishing point, some exposure control). Most significantly, my camera is only supported by Camer RAW 3.1 and better, which is only supported by CS2.
