A college/university will sell them pretty cheaply..
besides that, ebay/amazon OEM versions are pretty cheap as well -
You can download and install service pack 2. I'd say around $70-80 for an OEM copy of XP Home on ebay. You could try linux if all you want to do is surf, office and email. Works quite well for those things.

Linux is an open source OS(Just noticed, OSOS
), but is more complex for people like me.
I wanted to try it but I'm still skeptical about the shift and its earlyin the school year, I'll do it next summer -
Might want to try the live cd to see if works first.
