Have anybody tried this? I saw it on the internet but not tried as I think it may be risky!

Dude, this is like the most popular notebook program. MobileMeter measures the temp of the CPU, HDD and the discharge/charge rate of the battery. It also gives info about the battery wear level.
It does not work with all laptops but probably 99% of them -
Yup this is a very commonly used piece of software. I use it all the time and it is very safe. It doesn't even need an install. It actually doesn't tell you the wear level of your batteries. What it detects: CPU speed/freq, CPU temp, Charge/discharge rate, HDD temp.
If you want something to detect the wear level of your battery, try this: http://www.passmark.com/products/batmon.htm (NOT FREE) -
You can also use NHC to see your battery type, capacity, manufacturer code, and wear level. It also has many other helpful features, so definitely check it out.
Oh yeah, it's free as well. -
NHC only works with Centrino laptops. BatteryMon supposedly works with others as well, but it wouldn't work on my Compaq Evo.
Check your battery's wear leve
