I was a long time user but the moment I tried Chrome v20 I fell in love as browsing webpages seemed way snappier and it was very noticeable
What do you guys use and think and why?
I know Firefox has better add-ons but that's about it now...
Google Chrome has better HTML5 support I think and its speed blows Firefox out of the water
-
I prefer Firefox's rendering and UI.
-
Using chrome because firefox with bloat load of add-on used to crawl. And restart for every extension change (aka I just want to check if that youtube add-on work with HTML5) is ...
Color management and greasemonkey is nice to have though.
Would use Opera if it support text drag xD. Chrome lock down too much stuff. -
I use either on depending on my mood but they are both great. They both had extensions for Ad Block and XMarks also I can run user scripts.
The browser I hate is IE you could not pay me to use that crud. -

if firefox just got a litttttttle bit better, i would switch back.
-
I got tired of FF constantly needing updating, and it seemed to choke on certain webpages I use.
Chrome is a really, really nice browser, though I tend to avoid it for non-practical reasons (I don't like Google).
I use IE9 as my primary browser. -
my firefox, due to add-ons, is faster then any chrome version.
-
I find Chrome to be faster than FF, so I usually prefer it over FF. I primarily use Opera and use IE9 about 30% of the time. I do use Chrome for mobile, and I also have FF on my Xubuntu machine (default). Really, you can't go wrong with any modern browser.
-
I am talking about web browsers for Mac OS X.
If Opera didn't have issues rendering some major websites and flash performance issues, I would prefer to use that. Great UI, it's speedy, feature packed, and I like supporting the underdog.
I used to use Firefox as my main web browser, but the UI is just god awful. Takes up way too much vertical space, and the UI is a eyesore.
Chrome, meh... I'm using it as my main browser since Apple has dropped support with Safari for Snow Leopard (although they still support XP). I don't like the cartoony UI, and I don't like Google as a company.
My preferred web browser is IE9 in Windows 7. The UI is fantastic and non-invasive, it's fast, and doesn't have any intrusive or unnecessary features. I wish it was made for OS X. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
ugh. an ie user *shudders*
well, if firefox didn't choke on random pages (same as mitlov) i would switch back -
None of them is perfect so choose your poison.
Strangely enough, I have no problems with FF at all. But then again, not with Google or Opera for the matter. Even IE9 works well. Thing is I like to keep tabs open. So I got rather full in IE and then I started usig others.
IE and Chrome have the worst tab management. Chrome got a little better with some add-ons, but still.
I like the idea Opera used. Very nice.
Firefox is still the best at this.
I guess it all relates user needs, to configs of them all and what part of the web one visits. -
everyone that says chrome is faster....are you like talking about 1-3 seconds faster, 10 seconds faster, or like .1 seconds faster?
EDIT: not sure how you can complain about firefox updates...it now works the same way that chrome updates work. although, i guess chrome doesn't show you a progress bar. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
chrome updates without user interaction, ff does not- they work a little differently and it is a bit annoying dealing with FF due to the frequent nature of the updates.
as far as the speed difference, it's marginal to me, except when firefox chokes, in which case the difference is a few seconds (chrome) vs. infinity (ff:quit, relaunch) -
Google nature is do everything w/o user (me) noticing just like how they collect my statistics. When you install chorme, they will make a task to check update every hour....
Chrome never ask user to restart aswell ~~
Not sure how the start-up time now, but used to FF take forever to launch when having all my essential add-on installed. -
I still use IE
-
*firefox update goes live
*close firefox whenever you like for whatever reason you like(not necessarily to get the latest update)
*open firefox
*instead of the browser, you see a updating firefox progress bar that lasts for <4 seconds** on my personal system
*firefox window opens
pretty sure this updated update mechanism has been live since firefox 12
**installed in <10 seconds on a HDD system i made for a family member
EDIT:
ah yes, i remember why Chrome is faster than the recent iterations of firefox.
Chrome pre-emptively downloads webpages; you get 'faster' load times in exchange for increased bandwidth usage. I'm not sure if its just cause i don't use Chrome enough or not, but it goes berserk when it guesses the wrong site.
what i feel is chrome's real advantage is superior flash performance**. I haven't researched the plugin architectures used by web browsers, but I would assume this performance increase is because flash seems to be tightly integrated with chrome itself.
**superior performance = fewer slowdowns, crashes when streaming many large flash videos. -
I prefer Chrome in terms of the core browser, but in terms of the entire browsing experience, I prefer Firefox because of the superior extensions.
I'm disappointed that the 2 browsers have not become more like each other - Chrome introduced extensions years ago, yet the ecosystem is still not as comprehensive or mature as Firefox's. Similarly, Mozilla has been working on separate processes for tabs almost since Chrome 1.0 was released, yet Electrolysis is pretty much dead today. -
electrolysis is indefinitely suspended; if not officially, then practically. I talked to a Mozilla guy about this a little while back.
-
At first I used to love FF and used it religiously ...until it started crashing regularly. And then there's little bugs like when you type a youtube comment, the first key you type in the comment box highlights the video instead and if you click on the side to cancel the highlight you still can't type a comment without refreshing the page. I'd also say it's a tad bit slower than Chrome and feels a little laggy at times.
With Chrome, I've NEVER had a problem with it. It's very fast and effective. My favourite browser right now and I don't plan on switching.
On a side note - anyone prefer Safari?
I recently tried it and it's slow as hell! It takes x3 longer than Chrome. Why is that browser so bad? it feels like I have a .56k connection when I use Safari.
@Generic User #2
I'd say Chrome is about 1.5-2 seconds faster than FF and 5 seconds faster than Safari from my experience. -
I used Firefox for 7 years, from its inception to late last year, before switching completely to Chrome. I have uninstalled Firefox and have not used it on my system since then.
For the longest time, Firefox was the only alternative to the slow, buggy, insecure Internet Explorer. It used to be fast, lightweight, and very powerful because of the gazillions of extensions and add-ons out there. But near the end of my time using it, I noticed that it started to really slow down, no doubt due to the add-ons that had accumulated on my system. Also, browsing would definitely slow down the longer I used Firefox, it wouldn't completely clear out from memory after closing, and it would crash mysteriously, wiping out all the tabs and Windows I had open at the time.
Since migrating to Chrome, I couldn't be happier. Chrome is noticeably faster in general browsing and has a simpler, less cluttered interface. I appreciate the built-in Adobe Flash Player plugin and the task manager for closing frozen tabs/windows without killing everything. It is also less of a memory hog and the automatic updates are less intrusive. While it may not have the sheer number of add-ons and additional functionality that Firefox has, for a simple, practical browser, it can't be beat.
Note that I haven't kept up-to-date with changes in Firefox since I stopped using it, so some of the issues I described may, in fact, have been resolved. Also, I have no experience with IE9 at all; that may actually be the best browser for all I know. -
I just wish one of Chrome's delicious plugins was as good as the Firefox version. I only use Chrome half the time for now until I can find replacements for all the plugins.
-
I've been using Chrome for a while now. I do like how it automatically syncs everything between my different computers & mobile devices as well.
Although, I used Firefox for the longest time. I did love it at what point. But it seemed like after v.3.x or so it started spiraling down hill. After that point, I only used it because there was no decent alternative.
Note: I've used Firefox from 1.0.3 -
Voted for Firefox for the UI layout, and it doesn't feel too bloated to me at least.
Don't use Chrome (I don't want data-mining software on my computer; Facebok's enough as it is), but I do use SRWare Iron, and it's pretty awesome too. Just don't like the UI as much.
-
I've never had a problem with firefox and it's never failed me so I'm still using that. I've tried Chrome a couple of times but I didn't notice it was faster and I'm more familiar with Firefox so I just go with what I'm used to.
-
Been a few years since I used FF. Left when the bloat started.
Chrome works well except when it does not work at all . . . which is about 10% of the time. Then I have to climb into the "wayback machine", hold my nose, and use MSIE. -
I have both. Chrome is better, but I like FireFox. I wish it took from Chrome what he needs. And wouldn't as sluggish on old lappies as it is now. Chrome is super fast
-
I use Chrome, FF and IE. Out of the 3 chrome is most used. FF slows my laptop if I have more than 3-4 tabs and in case it crashes all the tabs are gone which is the most irritating part.
IE9 is better than FF I feel but if u have a slower machine like me, chrome makes more sense. I can go up to 20 tabs without any problems. On faster PC the difference is not much noticeable and maybe FF would be good

This FF version I'm currently using (beta 14) is by far the worst I of all recent versions of FF. It crashes when I play videos, kinda slow and sluggish. Version 13 was nice. I would be very comfortable using IE9, but the lack of some critical add-ons makes it impossible. Hope FF will improve in the future.
-
Chrome is probably the better browser, but I prefer Mozilla's privacy policy.
-
The fact that your preferred browser is IE9 blows my mind. It takes at least 3 times longer to start than Chrome does. It's slow loading pages. It's ugly. -
For me, IE tab is required for both Chrome and FF though. IE is the king of opening page correctly(with ads) xD.

18 months ago, I would have told you I didn't have an extreme preference. The first time I ever opened IE on my windows 7 machine at home I though uh... no. WAY TO MUCH CRAP... taskbars taking up a fourth of the vertical pixels lol. I tried simplifying it to little avail and soon turned to Firefox. I've never used IE regularly except at school and work. I had never used Chrome and saw the add on the google homepage. I thought I'd try it out and instantly loved it. However, I still used firefox too. Then, one day, I got a message informing me a new version of firefox was out!! I installed the update and opened Firefox... wait... this looks... like chrome... but they didn't out-chrome chrome. As I liked the simple look of chrome, I didn't particularly mind. Then begain the falling out of good ol' firefox. No matter what I set my home page as one day, it always reverted to Babylon. Eventually, I got very frustrated with FF and stopped using it. I find chrome very simple and easy to manage. I really don't wan't many plug ins. I have AVG do not track, realplayer plugin, chrome-to-phone, and that's about all. I HATE toolbars in browsers. For my browser needs, chrome is my preference.

There's one real issue at hand between Chrome and Firefox.
Backwards compatibility with hardware. Using an older thinkpad with 1gb of ram should be more than sufficient. Hell, when it was brand new I was able to open up MANY tabs without any slowdown or running out of memory....
Nowadays, 1gb will be maxed out after 3-4 tabs... It's absolutely ludicrous. Almost like they're forcing you to purchase a newer PC or, at least, more RAM.
I just find it rather humorous that it's nearly unusable on my T61 hence my migration to other Linux browsers. -

For the privacy conscious there is also Comodo Dragon based on Chromium: https://www.comodo.com/home/browsers-toolbars/browser.php

I used to use FF up to about a year ago but tried Chrome and liked it a lot more. I hate IE. However, IE is the best at one thing, and that is to download Chrome or FF.
-
When I load three tabs in Firefox the whole thing is unusable until they load. When I do it in Chrome it's not an issue at all.
One really heavy webpage slows the entire Firefox process down. Not the case with Chrome.
Not to mention security. -
-
modern firefox only loads apps and the current tab when it boots.
EDIT: trust me....i run 300-400 tabs at any given moment, it does NOT take long to open the browser at all. -
both are different browser .
both takes many differences .
all seo work do on Firefox not on the chrome . -

I have to admit on here gets lots of user talking about one is better then the other but no one seems to give up what site they used it on so others can test to see if their claims are based on real world usage or just hear say. So I would ask anyone that says one or the other is better at least give us a link to where you are making those claims - so we can see for ourselves how much is based on real usage and what is based on hear say. Would anyone here at least give us a link to where they are claiming one is slower then the other?? At least this way anyone can go to that site and test for themselves to see how much is based on the browser and not the limitation of the user hardware causing the problem. Also since they don't tell us if they have scripts or addons running that could also be part of the problem with their browser not working as well. So there are more factors at work then just the browser since the internet has gotten bigger and more data is flowing back and forth with more chances to cause errors now and then that cascades down the line.
-
I switched to Chrome from Firefox because Firefox was getting a bit bloated for me. Ever since then, I use Chrome for my personal stuff, Firefox for work, and Opera for hobbies.

I'm so far liking FF15

FF has consistently given me smoother Adobe Flash video streaming than either Chrome or IE.
FF all the way!
