I am aware that a user can do a clean install of Vista with an upgrade by following these steps. After the clean install is done, is there any Win.old folder or something similar? Are there any big or small disadvantages of doing a clean install with a Vista upgrade following the linked steps compared to doing a clean install with a full version of Vista other than the extra time involved?

Also, do all versions of Vista ask which version to install? In other words, if I got Home Basic, could I use the Home Basic DVD to install Home Premium with a valid, purchased, legal license key?

All Vista DVDs are the same. You just need to provide a valid key according to which Vista license you own. This should be the same for Vista Upgrade DVD too.

I did a clean install before (though not using Vista Upgrade DVD), and there is no win.old folder. I think you can choose this in one of the options.

You can install any full version of vista from the upgrade dvd, i have done it several times, just boot from it like you would a normal vista dvd instead of using as the instructions tell you. Just make sure to choose the version you have the lisence for.
