I did a clean 64bit Vista OS install last night and I've finally got it up and running again but a new problem that I've never had has arrived. Overheating? Right after I installed the OS the laptop shut off. Kept trying to turn it back on an it would shut right back off again. I packed my laptop up and was gonna take it to Best Buy this morning but it turned on (to my surprise) and I started updating and installing programs, 5 mins later it shuts off. I feel the vent and it's very hot that is why I'm suspecting overheating. Now that all the heavy duty installing/updating is over it hasn't shut itself off again so I don't know if it's safe or not. Just wanna get some input into why this is happening...

Go to cpuid.com and download HWMonitor which tells you temperature of ur hardwares(CPU,gpu, and HDD).
    Then post the temperature here.
Also get a can of compressed air try clean out the vent

    HDD is 113 °F
    GPU is 145 °F
    Intel Core #0 is 116 °F
    Intel Core #1 is 120 °F
    TZ00 is 136 °F

These are the temperatures when I'm not doing anything except typing on this site.

    holy!!! that is so hot!
no wonder your laptop gets shutdown.
Buy a can of compressed air, then clean out ur vent.
Also, you might want to get a thermal paste like Artic Silver and apply them on your cpu and gpu.

Edit:oh nvm, those temps are in fahrenheit lol, in that case those temps looks normal.
But still i would try clean vent first. What is the model of your laptop? which brand?

It's a Gateyway M-6864FX. I just don't understand why it kept shutting down right after the clean install when it has never done it before...

LOL! When you shout "holy!!!". I quickly check my own HWmonitor(Fahrenheit), but then, I noticed it was also 1XXF(but when see the celsios, it is only 30-40C-50C, phew~).
Yet, OP did having higher temperature(than usual) of CPU, GPU and HDD.
Recently, I have format my OS to Vista 64bit too.
I can notice the changes of my CPU. The 64bit Vista seems to have different DSDT table to my CPU. Last time, I was able to disable my CPU IDA function but now it is LOCKED with Vista 64bit. So, I came out with a hypothesis that it is due to Vista 64bit CPU changes problems. Well, I guess changing of DSDT table may help. However, I don't know how to modify it. In addition, I don't have any problem with 64bit of Vista(except some minors).

EDIT: Undervolt with RMClock may help too!! Easiest way~

I believe all the drivers are up to date, I downloaded them from the Gateway website and put them on a disc, I've even updated everything available via Windows Update.
