Hi! I had problem with my Windows 7 laptop doing a full scan with Windows Security Essentials. After about 35 minutes into the scan. the thing would stop and bring a window with the message Windows had shut down my laptop to prevent damage.
While searching, I did discover that when you scan (and most likely doing something else at the same time) it draws a lot of power so maybe the laptop became too hot to run. I did open it up and even though the fan was a little dirty, I have seen worst. I did try again...it lasted longer maybe 45 minutes and the same shut down.
I decided to get rid of Windows Security Essentials and to switch to AVG free. This time, it did last almost 1.5 hours. but with the same ending. So, seems that there was something in there that I could only get rid of by doing a clean install (I'm not sure if this is the right expression for the option I chose). After trying the first top option which is "start-up repair", I had to choose the option where your data stay intact but the C: drive get wiped out.
So, I click on that option and it starts...1%-2% and so on. It took about 7 min. for that first step. Then, the second step did start but after a few min. , I did notice the laptop was off. I did press on the switch to start it again and now I'm stuck with a window that says:" Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume the configuration, restart the computer". You restart the laptop but it always comes back again to the same error message.
I did search quite a lot at Google and did try the 2 most simple/effective remedies. The first one is to boot the laptop in safe mode, wait for the error message to come, click on O.K. to delete the error message window and then start the process again without this time using the safe mode and for many, this do the trick.
Second most easy/effective trick is to boot it up in safe mode then press F8 to the get the prompt window, type in "explorer" then wait for a task bar to show and right click on the last icon to the right(can't remember the name) and then wait 10 secs before clicking O.K. to close the error message box. You then boot up the laptop normally and it goes through but...not for me.
I have the 3 DVD recovery discs but can't see how one could use them when the laptop don't want to boot at all and I wouldn't like to have to transfer all the data I have on my D: drive because using the recovery discs that stuff would be wiped out. Any ideas?

Sounds like it's overheating. Possibly cleaning the fan wasn't enough and the processor needs a repaste. Or the fan is dying?

Maybe it's that but...how do you get rid of that : Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume the configuration, restart the computer

Open it up, clean all the dust out, and re-paste the CPU/replace the fan, if needed?

Seems my English is really bad so...I will try again. ..how do you get rid of that error message? : "Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume the configuration, restart the computer".
The fan not working properly is likely what did stop the laptop during the clean install but now that Windows isn't booting, it's not putting in a working fan that will make it works.

I was thinking to get rid of Windows 7 and replace it with Ubuntu
( I now have A live Ubuntu disk and it works) but I just learned
that if I do that all my data will be gone. There's the option to
install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7 but I'm sure I don't have
enough space in my C: drive to do that. I read you could delete
that partition but how do I get to my partition with a non
bootable laptop or one running on a live Ubuntu CD ?

The problem in the first place is that you tried reinstalling Windows on a machine that was suffering from a hardware issue. In the end, if you can't take care of that hardware issue, you may not be able to install Ubuntu, Windows or any other OS for that matter.

As for the data, your best bet would be to pull the drive from the computer and try to get the data using a different computer.

Using the Ubuntu live CD I have access to all my data. Again, how do you get rid of that error message? : "Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume the configuration, restart the computer".
And how do you get access to your partitions or C: drive using a Ubuntu live CD ?

    Solution:

When prompted with error unable to complete installation:

Hit SHIFT-F10 to bring up command prompt.

    type: CD C:\windows\system32\oobe

    type msoobe

    enter

Make a generic account and password. hit finish (if it requests a product key and you have one, enter it now. if OEM/No key required, just finish). Set time/date. Finish.

    Restart.
