I thought that I could try the method using ABR software(version that supports windows 7) with a new dell inspirion 620 desktop, and ABR did the backup fine. But after I reinstalled windows I tried activating it and it said missing file and isn't able to activate. It gives me an error when manually entering the product key from the back up. I don't have the recovery disks so now I'm stuck.

It could be that your Dell does not come with an OEM edition where the Activation file cannot be saved (backed up). Call in Microsoft for Telephone Activation using your COA key. It's quite simple and quick

    cheers ...

Did you run ABR in admin mode when doing the backup? :)

I installed an oem version of windows 7 professional and when i run ABR it backs up the key but not the certificate. I did run as administrator. the software is not very good and has only worked on 1 of the 4 computers i tried it on. it says successful but if you check the folder the certificate is missing every time. it only copies the code.

You may have the wrong version of ABR. The original ABR program was for XP (backup only the product key) and Vista. ABRbeta is for Windows 7 and backs up the product key and certificate. ABRbeta has worked to backup all information required on the three computers I tried it on.

If you have a SLIC 2.1 BIOS and a factory installed Windows 7, ABRBETA works!
