Hey guys, would like to install my own oem copy of windows 7 or 8 on my laptop that didn't come with an OS, obviously the laptop does not have any drivers either but will the USB ports recognize the external usb DVD drive or usb flash drive containing bootable installation of windows 7/8 the moment I plug it in??

If you have USB2.0 port, use that for Windows 7 as it has no native USB 3.0 drivers and it may pose problems. Windows 8 shouldn't have potential weird behavior with USB 3.0. I know for sure a USB2.0 port will work perfectly fine for both 7 and 8, but I've never attempted using USB 3.0 to avoid potential issues with 7. I know however that it can be done on USB 3.0, but that you may need to point the Windows 7 installer to the USB 3.0 drivers during the installation..

Windows 8 from a USB 3.0 flash drive may have issues. It depends on the system and it's USB host controller's support in loading the default Microsoft USB 3.0 drivers. Just do what Tijo said and stick with a USB 2.0 flash drive. I strongly recommend you use the Microsoft tool to load your copy of Windows (7 or 8) onto the USB drive. It works faster that way and with less errors.
