I'm looking to get a new laptop for school next year and am trying to get the most out of it.

At the end of the day I want
    -a blazing fast SSD
-Windows 7 (when it comes out)
    -a clean install

So I want to install a SSD, do a clean install, and get Windows 7. The problem is I do not know what order would be easiest/allow me to do all of the above.

    What order would be easiest?

When you upgrade from Vista to 7 is it like performing a clean install?

If I install the SSD drive first and clean install Vista, am I still eligable for the free upgrade?

Any input in this subject would be greatly appreciated. If this is in the wrong topic for this section let me know. Cheers.

You get a free upgrade if you buy the laptop before Windows 7 is released. That means it will come configured with Vista installed. Read the sticky thread about Windows 7 upgrades in the Windows 7 board.

I suggest you call the customer service representatives today and ask them this question. Remember to do a voice recording in case you have to goto court in the future!

    cheers ...

When I saw this many posts I was hoping someone would know what order I should do those in.

October is right around the corner so I figure I will leave my laptop as is until then, clean install windows 7 and then install the SSD.

If you just want to upgrade your hard drive, is there something in Windows I can use to copy the files from one hard drive to the other?

If there is a better way to do this, please let me know.

If you are upgrading to a larger drive with the same format, I would recommend cloning it (Acronis come to mind) to an external and swap the drive when done.

If not, then just install the OS onto the new drive, then copy your files over from the old one using an external housing.

    cheers ...

Since it seems that you'll be buying a SSD to install it, just go ahead and do that and then pop in your Windows 7 disc to do a clean install.

You'll just have to install your programs again and get your data back.

Oh, and should you ever record a phone call as some people in this thread have discussed, make sure you notify the person on the other end of the telephone that you are recording the call. Otherwise taking it to court is useless as it will not be allowed to be presented as evidence.

In my opinion this is daft anyway; you should always get them to confirm via email or letter.

And with reference to the posters question, yes you'd still be eligible, as long as you bought your computer (or more specifically your copy of Vista) from one of the microsoft partners. Check this out with your software vendor before buying.

Thanks. Apparently just saying thanks is too short for forums.

Most people say it like "Thanks, 10char" :)
