I just got a new laptop at work and the IT guy told me I can keep my old T42p. The T42p is running XP Pro but also a lot of other software that makes it compatible with the company's network. I wouldn't know where to start uninstalling programs. Is it best to do a clean install of XP using the product key on the bottom of the computer or will I run into problems doing this?

If you have a copy of XP Pro on CD, then I'd definately say go for a fresh install. Its not worth running an unclean system, especially one that probably has had many programs installed/uninstalled over the years. It'll probably run way better.

Clean instal is the best way to go,the sticker on the bottom is your Serial key that you can use.
Windows Marketplace should be selling copies of XP for cheap(10-20$),use that key and you`re good to go.

do you think there will be any problems because this thing is set up to run on a corporate network and I don't have administrative access to do everything.

I dont think you get it. :) If you boot off of an XP CD.... and re-install windows, everything on the notebook will be gone. Meaning all the stuff you're worried about = nothing to worry about. :)

No. Back up your data, and reinstall after formatting the HD. :)

The installer boots before the OS so you will not deal with any administrator permissions.

I would also be careful about moving files off the computer until you've reinstalled Windows or done a full scan of the system for viruses. Can't be too careful. ;)

Of course. But I would hope, if he has personal stuff on there, that he would be keeping on top of that. :p
