Is there a way to prevent programs from activating at the startup? How do I remove programs from the system tray?
I'm trying to clean up my system tray because some of the programs in it are causeing slow startups and they're are not exactly necessary.
Any help with this wound be appreciated.

Go to the start menu, click run and type in msconfig. Then click okay. From there, select the the startup tab. In there are the lists of programs that will start and not start. They programs that have the box checked are the ones that will start. You can disable them from started by unchecking these boxes. Be VERY careful though, as some of these programs are vital to the system working. Only uncheck those that you know are for programs that you don't want to start when starting up the computer.

the first way to do it is to try to configure it from within the program itself. Then move on to msconfig to use a bigger hammer. Just using msconfig, some programs will keep re-creating the startup entries every time that they're run if you don't tell them not to.

I disabled some of the programs but now I get a message that It doesn't like the changes.

Ignore the messege. Just check the box which says "Don't show this messege again". It just informs you that some programs won't start up, and that its in selective start, where programs are manually selected to start up. It's nothing to worry about.

The only Icon in my tray is wireless network. and battery if not plugged in. I cant afford a rocketship computer like everyone else so I have to control and conserve all my computing power as much as possible.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call my computer a rocketship, but I think it can handle a little more than two Icons.

It's not the number of icons, it's the programs behind the icons. I have 4 icons in my system tray that are networking icons, and they don't eat up any memory. So just disable the larger programs you don't need, like the QuickTime loader. There are also programs like the Adobe Acrobat Reader quicklaunch that eat up memory that DON'T show up in the system tray. The tray is a red herring. Look at memory usage for different processes, and see which ones are unnecessary.
