Any option in iTunes which allows this? For example I already removed the physical file from my HDD but the file is still listed in the iTunes playlist. How to refresh the playlist to reflect the changes?

Click on a file then hit Ctrl-A > Delete

I think he was being a smartass. Ctrl+A is to "select all."

Does it allow you to select the column with the exclamation point in it? That would bring all the unidentified files together and you could easily select and delete them.

Just Ctrl+A Delete and re-add the songs to your library.
Best way to do it. Don't need to look song by song.
Just make sure you just delete the files in Itunes

The exclamation mark only comes up after I click on a non existent track. Is there anyway to refresh the list so that the exclamation marks comes up? I don't understand why is it so difficult to remove dead tracks argh

As others have mentioned here wipe out your entire library (making sure you don't actually delete the files of course) and rebuild it. Quickest and surest way to do it.
