So I just got my new Sager and will be giving my HP Comaq nc8230(business notebook) to my brother. I wanted to know if there was any way to revert a system back to "new" status without deleting all the updates for windows. It's an XP SP2 OS.

    Thanks,
    The Commodore

I think that by restoring the laptop to "new" status as far as software is concerned you do inherently lose all windows updates. Since it's family I would roll back the computer then connect it to the internet for a couple of minutes to allow it to get the updates.

I think it would be best for you to format whole hard disk drive and perform clean install of Windows XP SP3.

You will need Windows XP SP3 CD. If you already have one, then you could follow this guide to do reinstallation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896526

If you do not have Windows XP SP3, you can always find one by googling around ;) .

    EDIT:
Or if you have old Windows XP version (SP1 or SP2), you can just reinstall Windows using that CD and then download and install SP3 after you finish reinstall Windows XP.
