I have some .avi files that won't play in Windows Media Player. I know the codec I need to have, and I have it. I downloaded DivX Player, and the files play fine in it. But, they still do not play in WMP. I thought if you had the codec, whether it was in another player, that you'd be able to play it in WMP?

    Any help would be awesome!

right click on the avi file you want to play and choose "open with"
click "Choose Program" (even if u see the shortcut to WMp...still click "Choose Program"

Now highlight "Windows Media Player" and near the bottom put a check mark on "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

Now each and every avi encoded with DviX codec will play within WMP as default player
